Description

A number of exercises and drills to teach goalkeepers  (Age 10 to 12).

Covering a warm up and then a number of drills that involve the following..

  • Set position.
  • Footwork.
  • Handling at various heights.
  • Introduction to diving.
  • Strength and conditioning.
  • Footwork and diving.
  • Speed using some sprint work.

Warm Up.

Organisation of session ( 2 minutes at a time)...6 minutes total.

  • Set up an area 15 yards by 15 yards.
  • Place 4 coloured cones outside the corner of the area.
  • On each cone place 3 to 4 footballs.
  • 4 goalkeepers are present in this drill and each is given a colour that represents THEIR disc.
  • They start in the centre of the drill and on the coaches command for 2 minutes they try and place a ball from the corner onto a different colour disc.
  • Once all the balls are in play they move footballs off their colour disc within the grid and place it onto a different colour.
  • The winner has the least balls on their colour disc at the end of the 2 minutes.

Coaching Points:

  • Encourage short sharp footwork.
  • Encourage the keepers to be aware of their space.

Progression:

Increase the time and add in the following:

  • Coach can call the following commands after blowing a whistle.....( Introduction to basic strength and conditioning exercises).
    • Star Jump.
    • Lunge.
    • Squat.
    • Set.....(Keeper gets into set position).
      • On the coaches call the young keepers do 3 of each exercise. In the case of calling SET the keeper assumes the set position.

Introduction to diving

Organisation of session: 9 minutes.

  • Goalkeeper is in a sitting position.
  • 2 balls are placed to his or her left and right......distance suited to goalkeeper height.
  • From the seated position the goalkeeper moves their legs behind and leads with their hands to secure the ball as if making a save.
  • Repeat a number of times for both sides.

Coaching Points

  • Encourage the keeper to lead with the hands.
  • Both hands secure the ball...one on top and one behind.
  • Head must be behind the ball.
  • Watch the elbows while landing.
  • Shoulder breaks the fall.
  • Eyes fixed on the back of the ball.
  • In progression from the kneeling position, ensure the goalkeeper steps forward with the knee before collapsing to secure the ball.

Progression

  • Coach calls left or right so keeper doesn't know which side so he or she has to secure.
  • Drill is done from a kneeling position.
  • Before the keeper collapses, a light volley is served centrally by the coach and keeper makes appropriate catching technique.
  • Coach calls left or right for the keeper to make the diving save.
  • When the keeper is comfortable with a stationary ball the coach can serve the ball by foot.

Footwork and diving from standing position.

Organisation of session: 5 minutes

  • Place 5 cones in a straight line less than a yard apart.
  • Goalkeeper moves forward using short, sharp footwork through the cones.
  • At last cone coach serves a ball low or mid range to side of the goalkeeper.
  • Keeper uses appropriate technique to save the ball.

Coaching Points

  • Quick movement.
  • Short, sharp footwork.
  • Encourage moving in set position body weight forward.
  • Coach proper diving technique at varying heights....eyes fixed on the ball, dive forwards and lead with the hands in direction of the ball.
  • Keeper jogs back to starting point.

Progression:

  • Uses different footwork....Facing sideways, backways etc.
  • Add in a double diving save at the the last cone.
  • Keeper can jog backwards or sprint to starting position.
  • Introduce a ladder for footwork on returning to the starting position.
  • For older ages at the last cone... serve one ball along floor to left and one at waist height to right...based on keepers ability.

Diving with some plyometrics.

Organisation of session: 10 minutes.

  • Set up a square 4 yards by 4 yards.
  • Place 2 hurdles inside the grid.
  • The goalkeeper jumps the first and second hurdle while maintaining the set position....(helps encourage maintaining the set position)
  • When the goalkeeper jumps the second hurdle the coach rolls or throws the ball at varying heights to the side of the goalkeeper who makes a diving save.. 
  • Goalkeeper jogs back to the start.

Coaching Points

  • Maintain set position while jumping and land softly on the balls of the feet.
  • High knees while jumping the hurdle.
  • Eyes fixed on the ball.
  • Proper diving technique receiving the ball....dive forwards and lead with the hands in direction of the ball.

Progression

  • Goalkeeper jumps the hurdles side on (facing away from server)
  • Goalkeeper on coaches command moves sideways left or right around the cone and back into line with the ball and server to make a save.
