in this session the players used were under 14s welsh league academy players, the topic of the session was focused on the final third in attack. for this session there 14 players available for the session and the learning objectives are to create more chances in the final third and different movements within the final third, the red team have 10 seconds to score adding quick tempo when attacking and quick transitions once the ball is dead

warm up:

as the practise is based on attacking in the final third, the players are split into 2 teams with the red team being the attackers and main focus with the blue team being the defenders. there will be a neutral player help the attackers but also help the defenders if they manage to win the ball. red team are looking to score in the big goals where as the blue team are to score in the 2 mini goals if they win the ball from the red team

Tactical (20 mins)

Specific

14 players - 2 x 10min blocks

Red team - both fullbacks, 1 centre back and goalkeeper removed

Blue team - both wingers and strikers are removed and replaced with mini goals

Starting point will be with the red number 5

Roles -

- striker looking to pin the defence and make runs in behind the defence but also look to link up play on times

- Number 10 to play in the pockets of space in between the defence and midfield of the blue team. number to also look to make 3rd man runs in behind and use the overload in midfield to keep possession and create chances

- wingers to stay high and wide offering width in attack

2 midfielders to always show for the ball being the outlet to play and retain possession. one of the midfielders also look to join the attack when the opportunity is right with option to link up with wingers and number 10 making 3rd man runs

- centre back to start play and play in the pivot role to offer an option to play for the red team and also defend mini goals on transition

What ifs/scenario

1, What if the two blue midfliers stay compact on stop the number 10 receiving the ball? the two red midfielders can drift wide creating and 2 v 1 situation out wide with the winger creating the opportunity to attack and get a cross into the box

2. what if the blue centre back steps onto the 10? the red team striker can look to rotate with the red team 10 dragging the centre back who stepped in away from the space and allows the striker to receive the ball

conditions

Blue team wins the ball they have 8 seconds to score in the mini goals

Target

Red team look to create chances and attack in the final third

LSG (30 mins)

Large sided game

7 v 7

Area Size - half pitch

Timings 2 x 14 min blocks with 1 min rest brakes for players

according to Siewert (2024)  ''To play attacking football it is really important to train your team to attack, especially when opponents are sitting deep in their own half and space is tight. That means players need to find the right timing for passes, through balls and chipped balls, as well as deep runs and runs in behind'' players movement and creativity create chances in attack and offer more chances of scoring.

Position specific information:

-Wingers stay high and wide, look to play as a second striker when the ball is on the opposite side and attack the back post when crosses come into the box

-Striker to occupy the ball sided centre back looking to receive the ball link up with wingers and number 10. make runs in behind when the opportunity is right

-number 10 to play in pockets of space and look to link with the striker by playing passes through or making 3rd man runs

-Midfielders to offer option to play and keep possession. also look to support wingers and number 10 by making runs in behind or passes through to the forwards

Blue team will look to play high and aggressive

interventions/what ifs

What if the winger plays more narrow? one of the midfielders can drift wide retaining the width on both sides and creating an overload and 2 v 1 or 3 v 2 opportunity in the final third

challenges/conditions/targets

challenge the number 10 to receive on the back foot and play forward or look to drive at the defence looking for a centre back or full back to step out leaving the space behind them

if the blue team win the ball back they will have a limit of time to try and score before the ball is dead and play resets
