Key Factors - Dealing with shots from central areas. GK being
able to deal with varying shots on goal from central areas of the
pitch.
Organisation (SKILL)
Full size goal using the central area of the final third of a full size
pitch. Central column marked on the pitch using cones that the
ball must stay in at all times. GK stands in set position roughly 2
yards off the goal line. The server is standing 20-25 yards away
outside of the 18 yard box in a central position. Second server is
standing 30-35 yards away outside of the 18 yard box in a central
position. Server 1 passes the ball into server 2 who then plays a first
time pass on the floor to his left or right. Server runs onto the ball
and shoots the moving ball first time at the goal forcing the GK into
a save.(shots must be within the 2 blue cones on goalline) If possible have a left and right footed server to improve
accuracy from both sides.
Progressions:
- Second server aiming shots lower/higher to vary type of save the
GK has to make.
- Server feeds a bouncing ball to second server to volley/half volley the ball.
- Second server taking a touch before striking the ball.
- Remove cones from goaline , shots can go anywhere within the goal
Key Technical Points:
- GK’s set/starting positions (2 yards off the goal line, feet shoulder width apart, slight bend in knee, weight forward (nose in front of
toes), elbows tucked in but forward and away from the body, hands in comfortable but ready position, eyes on the ball. Adjusting
starting position in relation to the ball.
- Correct technique (high static/diving save, low static/diving save, scoop pick up) is being used dependant on the feed.
- Ball is being forced into safe area away from the goal after the initial save.
- Goalkeeper reacts to loose ball after save (recovery save or recovery line)

Key Factors
-Angles and positioning- in relation to the ball and the goal.
-Footwork- short, sharp steps in order to aid angles and
positioning in the goal.
-Decision making- shot-stopping decisions - handling, diving etc.
-Recovery- spilled balls; reclaim as quickly and as efficiently as
possible (Habits!)
Organisation
-1 GK in goal (can be adapted for large group numbers to 2 GKs
rotating) with the rest forming an arch on the outside of the area.
-Play starts on one side; with the server taking a shot against the
working GK, this sequence is followed by the rest of the servers.
-GK joins the end of the arch; servers move up 1 place to their left
and typically the first server who started the sequence off will be
the next GK.
Progressions/Variations
-Servers take 2 yards back; servers will now be asked to take the
ball out of their feet by taking a touch in front of them before having
a shot on goal.
-Servers are numbered (i.e 1-5) - coach calls out a number randomly; that server then has a strike against the working GK.
