Practice Description
Organize a small-sided game (SSG) with normal scoring rules.
Players are encouraged to dribble and take players on whenever possible.
If a player successfully dribbles past a defender, their team earns +1 bonus point in addition to any goals scored.
Players can only pass if there is no realistic dribbling option or if they are under heavy pressure.
Focus on positive attacking play, creativity, and confidence in 1v1 duels.
Coach manages tempo and reinforces moments where good decisions are made — both dribbling and passing.
Coaching Points:
Dribbling Mindset - Encourage players to face forward and attack defenders.
Body Shape & Control - Stay low, use both feet, protect the ball when under pressure.
Creativity - Use skills (step-over, feint, body swerve) to beat opponents.
Decision-Making - Recognize when to dribble vs. when to pass safely.
Transition - After losing the ball, react quickly to recover and defend.
Support Play - Teammates must move to provide passing options when dribble isn’t possible.
Progressions:
Time Bonus: Score within 10 seconds of beating a defender = 2 points.
Extra Defender: Add a floating neutral player to increase passing options.
Limited Passes: Team can only make 3 consecutive passes before a dribble attempt.
Zones: Divide pitch into thirds – middle third must include a 1v1 or dribble attempt before entering final third.
Defender Incentive: Defenders get 1 point for a clean tackle or interception.
Relevance to the Game:
Encourages attacking players to be brave in 1v1 duels.
Builds confidence to break defensive lines through individual skill.
Replicates in-game moments where players must decide between dribbling or passing.
Develops both attacking creativity and defensive anticipation.
