Description

Organisation (practice layout and transition)

  • Practice is for eight players, aged U9, but can be easilyadapted for more or fewer players.
  • Area size is 30m x 20m, separated into six sections.
  • On arrival, four players receive one colour of bib, and foura different colour.
  • Practice area and bib colours remain the same for technical and skill practice. To transition to skill practice, four goals are added to the practice area and additional balls placed on the perimeter to speed up play.

Technical practice - 10-15 mins (15 mins)

Conditions

  • Each player takes up position in a section, with two opposite corners having an extra player.
  • Initially, one ball in used, which starts in one corner section.
  • The ball is passed, in a clockwise direction, from section to section with the player following their pass. Players are instructed to ‘open’ their body, receive the ball with their furthest foot (left) and pass with their right.

 Adaptations

  • 1. Drill is repeated but in the opposite direction, allowing players to practice receiving and passing with their opposite feet.
  • 2. A second ball is placed in the opposite corner and the drill proceeds with two balls being used. This increases the speed of the drill and means players must be aware of receiving the ball soon after playing apass.
  • 3. Change direction of drill with two balls in use.
  • 4. Challenge players to play the pass ‘first time’. This encourages players to adjust their body position more quickly in order to play the pass as it’s received.

Mechanics of technique

  • Head up to receive ball
  • Open body to where the pass is to be played.
  • Receive ball with ‘farthest’ foot.
  • Head up to target of pass.
  • Play pass with inside of foot.

Skill practice - 10-15 mins (15 mins)

Conditions

  • 5 v 3, no goalkeepers (a player on each team removes their bib and switches between whichever team is attacking).
  • Play proceeds as a match with teams trying to score ineither of the two goals they are attacking.

 Adaptations

  • 1. Players are asked to make a minimum number of passes before they can score – can be increased depending on ability.
  • 2. Teams must pass ball into a minimum number of sections before scoring.
  • 3. A certain number of passes scores a ‘goal’.
  • 4. Revert to 4 v 4 to increase difficulty.
Learning outcomes

  • ‘Defenders’ challenge players' first touch and ability to pass under pressure.
  • Players encouraged to make intelligent runs into space.
  • Encourages players to switch play to space.
  • Keeping score increases fun element.
