Defending Phase: 4

Objective: To work together more effectively to regain possession of the ball in the attacking half of the field

WHO: #6, #7, #8, #9 #10 and #11 with #2, #3, #4 and #5

WHAT: Technique of Individual Defending, How to Set up a Line of Confrontation, Pressure, Cover, Balance, Compactness

WHERE: In the central channels and flanks areas of the attacking half of the field

WHEN: The opponents have their back to the field, or played a slow pass that can be pressed in front of the line of confrontation

WHY: To eliminate penetrating opportunities, and to win possession near goal in order increase scoring chances

Stage 1: Warm up (15 mins)

INTENSITY: Moderate ACTIVITY TIME: 2 mins REST: 30 secs INTERVALS: 4

Activity:

- Divide the space into (2) separate spaces (2 grids need to run two groups)

- Play 4v2 in one space.

- The attacking team should try to keep possession and count the highest number of consecutive passes.

- The defending team should try to regain possession, and pass the ball to their teammates in the opposite grid.

- As the ball transitions to the opposite grid, (2) attacking players and defending players transition to the grid with the ball.

Coaching Points:

1. Read cues of opposition and provide appropriate body shape

2. Pressure and cover

3. Communication - What does the Covering player(s) TELL the pressuring/delaying defender?

Stage 2: Small Sided Activity (20 mins)

INTENSITY: High ACTIVITY TIME: 2 mins REST: 2 min INTERVALS: 9

Activity:

- 5v5 - 2 Goals & 1 Goal (3rd team of 5 waiting)

- Place (2) goals on the end-line of the team you are not coaching (Black), and place (1) goal on the end-line of the team you are coaching (yellow).

- Target team (Yellow): #7, #8, #10, #9, #11

- Opposition team (Black): #2, #3, #4, #6, #8

Scoring: teams score by passing or shooting the ball in the small goals.

Coaching Points:

1. Speed, distance and Angle of Approach based on presuring defender.

2. Body Shape - defensive front line to force players inside

3. Communication - What does the Covering player(s) TELL the pressuring/delaying defender?

4. Principles of Defense-

- Pressure together

- Cover and balance

- Control & Restraint.

Stage 3: Expanded activity (25 mins)

INTENSITY: High ACTIVITY TIME: 6 mins REST: 1 min INTERVALS: 3

Activity:

- 7 v 6

- Target Team (Yellow) to large goal: #6, #7, #8, #9, #10, #11

- Opposition team (Black): #1, #2, #3, #4, #6, #8, #10

- Opposition look to score by getting ball to target (T) players on half way line (rotate these).

- Ball to restart with GK

Scoring: A goal scored after recovering the goal in the attacking half is worth 50 points. All other goals are 1 point.

Coaching Points:

2. How to establish a line of confrontation.
