Football/Soccer Session (Academy Sessions): Diamond Match: Playing out of the Back

Set-Up:

• Pitch: Half-field match with a diamond-shaped playing area created by a "safe zone" in each corner of the pitch.
• Teams: 5v5 plus goalkeepers.
• Objective: To develop playing out from the back and creating shooting opportunities.

Activity: Diamond Match

• Playing Area: The match is restricted to the diamond area; players must remain within this zone during normal play.
• Safe Zone Usage:
  • When the goalkeeper receives the ball, they have 4 seconds to release it, encouraging defenders to drop into the safe zones.
  • Once in the safe zone, defenders have 4 seconds to either pass or dribble out of the zone and re-enter the diamond.

Progressions:

• Attacking Width: Allow the attacking team to enter the safe zones when in possession to create width. However, once possession is lost, they must exit the safe zone immediately.

• Remove Cones: Remove the boundary cones of the diamond and allow the first pass from the keeper to be free for 4 seconds, encouraging playing out from the back. The keeper must play short but still release the ball within 4 seconds.

• Free Play: Transition to a normal game, but maintain an emphasis on short, quick passing from the goalkeeper to build play from the back effectively.
