Football/Soccer Session Plan Drill (Colour): Cones Shape Work
Save Image: Football/Soccer Session Plan Drill (Colour): Cones Shape Work

Cones Shape Work (10 mins)

Cone Shape Work (All - Morris to lead)

* Full size pitch to be used

* All players to take part - players can double up on positional cones

* Pitch split into 3 sets of cones

Red = Defensive shape

Orange = Transitional shape both attacking and defensive

Blue = Attacking shape

- Coach to call a colour cone / phase of play and players need to quickly react and move to the relevant set of cones.

- Team set up us 4-3-1-2

- Coach to add in LB, RB, LW, RW and centre call where players need to shuffle as appropriate.

- CF's to press FB's when RB.LB call is made - Team then shuffles accordingly. - Other CF splits pitch in half, left or right sided CM shuffles wider and other CM's shuffle over, same with back 4 if FB goes to press the LR or RW (this is ageneral example ofhow the team shoudl shuffle / move)

- Progresses to a centre back taking over the commands and players react accordingly.

- Players must react quickly like in a game and quickly transition in team shape between the phases of play.

- This will create familiarity for players in the team shape and get used to movements off the ball both attacking and defending and during transitional phases.

Passing Patterns MF 4-3-1-2 (30 mins)

Passing Patterns MF 4-1-3-2 - Midfield build up play passing patterns (Myself & Cocky)

* Using just over half the pitch the Red team are set up in a 2-1-3-2 formation

* The drill always starts with the coach (acting a red team CB) passing the ball into midfield

* The set up of the Red team is in a transitional shape by where they have just won the ball back and are looking to play forward quickly

* Red team looking to play the various passing patterns ending with a shot at goal

* Once the ball goes dead / a goal is scored the red team immediately retreat back to their starting positions (getting back into a defensive shape as if they have lost the ball in the final third) retreat line in place to use as a guide

* The 2 Blue team CM's and CB's can defend as a normal game but to start with are passive to allow

confidence in the patterns of play.

* The Red team are to have a maximum of 3 touches in order to move the ball quickly

* The Red team must use the overlaod in the MF playing through MF quickly.

* FB's can join in to create width to the attack. Opposite FB to then tuck in narrow defensively.

Pattern 1

6 - 7/8 - 7/8 - 2/3 - to deliver a quality ball into the strikers feet (who makes a run out wide) and then 2/3 to follow run forward playing a chipped ball into the space for the second CF to attack in the penalty area. Runs to be made by CF's and position of 10 to pick up balls on edge of box.

Pattern 2

6 - 7/8 - 10 - 10 to run with ball and play a through ball to 9/11 - movement and runs of CF's and quality of pass. No 10 must find space to receive the ball on the half turn.

Pattern 3

6 - 10 - 7/8 - to deliver a quality ball into the strikers feet who should then look to bounce the ball back to No 10 or 7/8 who makes a forward run and then playing a thorugh ball to the second striker in the space vacated by the first striker. The Striker who initially bounced the ball to No 10 should immediately spin out and around into the back post area.

Pattern 4

6 - 8/7 (who should carry the ball) - 10 who should find space to receive a pass on the half turn who should look to carry the ball into the penalty area and then pick out the CF's who will make 2 runs.

1. to the front post

2. central area.

Either 8/7 should then make a late run into the box. Must keep a twin screen if this happens defensively.

Pattern 5

6/7/8/2/3 to deliver an early ball in behind the opposition defence for the CF's to run onto. Once this ball has been played 10 should be looking to join the attack making a run into the box to act as a striker.

Movement / Runs to be made by players (generally)

9/11 (CF's) = This is where relationships should start to get built. If 9 drops to receive feet number 11 should be looking to spin inbehind the defence. If 11 makes a front post run 9 should be looking to go central.

10 = Attack central area of the penalty spot and always looking to find space to receive a pass on the half turn.

8/7 = Staying narrow defensively but finding space early to receive the ball on the half turn off 6. Possible late runs into pentalty box but never more than 1 of 7/8 does this run as other player must form a twin screen defensively with 6 to protect back 4. Also if FB on their side advances allow them to over lap and then be aware of need to possibly shuffle to defend wide space.

6 = To sit deep centrally to be in a position to prevent any counter attacks

2/3 = Look to join in when they can using body positions of CM's to trigger going forward

* Walk through patterns to start and then full speed

* Also encourage p

Defending with a Back 4 and 3 CM's (30 mins)

Organisation (Mike)

- Ball is served by 3 Target players on the half way line into the Blue team. Start with the Bue CM, Servers cannot join in the play

- Reds try to prevent any goalscoring opportunities. When they win the ball they must play into one of the 3 servers on gaining possession,

- Blue team can play back to server to start a new phase of play.

Progression - One server can now join in to make an additional player for the Blue team in the FB areas.

Key Factors

- Pressure, cover and balance

- Closest CM to ball pressure, other CM's move with the ball to remain compact and block passing lan

into forwards

- CB communicate to CM on positioning to stop pass

- Stay narrow and compact

- CMs show oppostion into an area of defensive support

- CM's must cover wide area's to stop space for opposite wingersa to run into. Force them back or

inside. Shuffle as a 3.

- Positive starting position for GK, on front foot to cut out through balls

- Dont sit too deep, squeeze the play when possible. Opposition head down - squeeze play

& Opposition head up - drop off - if appropriate.

Interventions

- Observe vertical and lateral movement of defenders in relation to the ball and the opposition. Observe points of pressure, cover & balance by the defending team.

- Diagnose, Accurate Recreation, Corrective Feedback & Demonstration, Rehearse and Play Live.

Defending Key Points

- Apply pressure to the opposition - Who, When, Where, How

- Who, when and where is pressure, cover and balance applied

- How are pressure, cover and balance provided to direct play or prevent penetration

- Side on Approach - Dont get caught flat

- Compact and Narrow Unit shape

- Show Inside/Outside

- Communication

- Angles and Distances of support

- Decision Making

- Tracking Runners

- Recovery Runs

Defending - Back 4 - Shape & Being Compact (30 mins)

Organisation (Morris)

- Middle zone set up as above. Defender should try to keep these distances while in th eback 4 to

ensure compact shape is retained as much as possible.

- The back 4 must shuffle as appropriate if the ball goes out wide. E.G the Blue team left winger receives the ball - The Red team Right Back should leave the middle zone and engage the winger. This should then result in the right sided centre back shuffling accros and the remaining defenders staying in the middle zone but retaining the same distances as detailed above. Therefore always having 3 defenders in the middle zone if the ball goes wide.

- When the ball goes out wide the back 4 must be ensuring the middle zone is covered with support , balance and cover positioning.

- This ensures the distances between the back 4 remain compact.

- When to drop and when the squeeze play is alway important.

- When to drop off = when the Blue CM has his head up looking to play inbehind.

- When to squeeze play = when the Blue CM has his head down / when ball is played backwards / or player receives the ball with his back to goal to prevent him turning.

- When the back 4 or DCM win the ball they have 5 seconds to play into 1 of the 3 target goals on the half way line. They represent our MF and CF's.

- Blue team looking to score past the Gk in the large goal.

- The game is 5 v 6 as the Blue player who starts the function joins in.

- Starting position of back 4 (NOT too deep)

- When the back 4 win the ball they must squeeze play and not stay deep

Progression

- The Blue CM plays a long ball at the Red team Back 4 and the game is live immediately.

- The Red Back 4 try to win the first ball and then squeeze the play upon clearing the ball.

- Blue look to compete for the first ball and win the second ball. Upon doing so they can score in the

large goal.

Key Factors

- Pressure, cover and balance

- Starting position of back 4 (NOT too deep)

- When the back 4 win the ball they must squeeze play and not stay deep

- CB communicate to CM on positioning
