Positional based possession (20 mins)

Focus + Session design

  • Positional based possession game
  • General practice
  • Red team looking to build effectively and transfer ball from one end to the other to score a point
  • Greens to press, win the ball and score
  • Pitch set up as seen above, half pitch with a 7-yard middle zone, width of 18 yard 
  • Once ball transferred, 2 neutral wide players and 2 defending players to move across
  • Neutral player can't transfer ball himself unless switched play
  • 3.5min games - 30 sec rest

  • Be composed in possession
  • Know your next pass - awareness and scanning
  • Ball detail - weight and accuracy

Specific (20 mins)

Focus + Session design

  • Specific build up phase with a counter-reactive element
  • Building team in a 4-3-3 (minus 3 forwards)
  • Defending team in a 4-3-3 minus 2 x CBs and CDM, FBs are waiting to break in
  • Building team to receive ball or dribble into end-zone, representing effective build-up
  • Once this happens, 2 red FBs to run around slalom in box whilst both FBs break out to counter attack

Coaching detail

  • CDM to be available as link player
  • FBS to be high and aggressive, although make sure we can see you, especially CBs
  • 8s, can you play beyond the press, on opposites, and look to create triangles with FBs

  • Team building must make set amount of passes in their half before they can break into opposition half

  • Scan, be aware of where pressure is coming from and where space is
  • Can you find the far-side

  • If you can get ball from one neutral to the other than you can break out straight away
