What:

  • Penetrating the middle third from build out position (RedBull phrase term of the day "play on the front foot!")

Where:

  • Defensive third of the field (into the middle third or attacking third).

Who:

  • 1, 2, 4, 5, 3, 6, 9

When:

  • In possession on the defensive third of the field or in a restart (goal kicks or throw-ins)

Why:

  • To break the thirds in control, unbalance opponent and create chances to score.

What if(s):

  • CBs #4 and #5 dribbling vs passing to the wider player (2, 3). Combination play vs center backs carrying out.

Session Overview

Option 1: 4 or 5 combine with most immediate passing lane (6, 3 or 2)

Option 1a: If 4 or 5 have space, they can break lines with a dribble forward.

Option 2: 4/5 breaks press with a direct pass to 9. (Look Far). Here, #9 matches the path of the ball when it leave the GK.

Option 3 (What it): If 3 or 6 (after second action action) are under pressure, a pass back to center back. Center back can restart Option 1 or 2.

Objective is to break the middle third as quickly as possible with intention.

Introduction (15 mins)

Organization:

  • 20x11 yard grid (x2).
  • Two lines on each end of each grid. 2 players waiting at the center.
  • Pattern play with movement and technical repetition.
  • 15 minutes (3-minute intervals, 1-minute break).

Instructions:

  • Follow pattern with player passing from end to center. Center to opposite end and movements/follow throughs.
  • After players pass from the end/top, they follow up to the center. After players pass from the middle of the grid they go back to the line where they passed from (see arrows).

Coaching Points/Questions:

  • Understanding complexity of pattern (patience, take your time).
  • Player in the center receiving with the hips open and at diagonal angle. If receive with the back foot (we call it front foot in RBNY), assess option to pass with opposite foot or depending on quality of first touch, use the same foot.
  • Players at center MUST receive in angled position. Emphasize this angled receiving position since it is essential when playing out of the back!
  • Quality of pass: firm, crisp and on the ground.
  • Communication and constant awareness. Scanning.
  • "Catch and Play" - that is receive and play quickly.

Progressions:

  • Add 1-2 progression and quick-play from pass 1.

Main Activity (20 mins)

Organization:

  • 2 adjacent grids with a buffer space in the center (21x11yards each grid).
  • 3v3 on each grid. Goalkeeper feeding on each grid (14 players). If 12, remove goalkeepers/feeders. If 10 players, 3v2 in each grid.
  • 4 mini goals (2 on each grid).
  • Soccer balls at the bottom with feeders.
  • Four 3-minute intervals, 1-minute break (16 minutes total).

Instructions:

  • Goalkeeper feeds to Attacking Team. Attacking team tries to score on mini goals.
  • Can have 2 games going at once.
  • Defending team tries to win ball back.
  • Scoring: Attacking team shoots on mini goals. Defending Team wins ball back and chips to the feeder/Goalkeepers.

Coaching Points/Questions:

  • First intention, forward!
  • Attacking Team: body position and shape when receiving from the Goalkeeper.
  • Opening the body to receive on the back foot and assess options after first touch.
  • Scanning to see surroundings before receiving.
  • Quality of passes: firm, crisp and on the ground.
  • Movement to constant create passing lane.

  • What if: when to penetrate vs when to recycle.

Progression:

  • Teams get a point if they transition from one grid to the adjacent one (to players with same color).
