Long Ball Touch (20 mins)

SETUP - Target cones setup 30y (adjust as necessary) apart. One mate strikes a flighted ball to other mate who has one touch to settle as close to cone as possible. Opponents do the same. Whichever team's ball is closest gets a point. First to 5 wins. Winners stay, loosers move to "right".

OBJECTIVE - To strike the ball in the air with proper technique and control the ball out of the air.

COACHING POINTS - Strike ball low on laces, under the ball. Knee NOT over ball (like driven shot). Chest up and high NOT over ball, touch lean towards side. Swing through with shooting foot. Ball 45degree out from you. Do NOT have ball too close. Last step on approach should be large to get power.

Long Short 2v1 (20 mins)

Organization:

- 40x20 area

- 1-2 Players in each line

- Balls start at 1

Instructions:

- 1 plays aerial ball to 2

- 2 opens out their body and plays to the feet of 3

- It is important that 3 takes a foward touch to attack the line. As this is happening the sequence continues. 3 then dribbles and finds the pass back to next mate at 1.

Progressions/Regressions:

- After passing to 3 number 2 then applies pressure to force a more realisitc touch and response to playing foward.

Coaching Points:

- Speed of Play: Ball should always be rolling.

- First touch when on cones 2 and 3 should be positive with the aim of playing foward.

- Play with both feet: Stress the importance of being comfortable with both and no such thing as dominant/strong.

Possession Drill (20 mins)

Set up

15 players in total - grouped into 3 teams of 5

36 x 36 pitch dimensions

1 Neutral player in middle

4 Neutrals in boxes on corners

Key Coaching Points

Theme of the drill is to encourage forward passing

The team in possession have to try and pass into one of the two small coned off areas

Each are has a player who must recieve the ball and play to the opposite square

The team who played the ball in to the square continues to be in possession of the ball and plays in the opposite direction.

The spare player in the middle plays for the team in possession. Ideally this player needs to be one of the central midfielders as his/her passing patterns will replicate what they do in a game.

Key Coaching Points

- Can we pass forward quickly into the end zones - least number of touches possible

- Once the ball enters the zone we must offer support quickly

- Recieve the ball on the half turn to make it easier to pass forward

- Can the team out of possession press as a unit and stop forward passes

- If the team defending wins the ball they must have 3 passes before they can pass into the end zone

7v3 with 4 goal counter option (20 mins)

Set Up: Use a field approximately 40x40.

Place 4 small goals/gates centrally on each line around the area as shown in the diagram.

Play 7v3. the team of 7 tries to keep the ball and score by connecting 7 consecutive passes. The 3 defenders score by winning the ball and scoring in nay of the four small goals.

It is ok to have subs in this activity if you have more than ten players in your group as you will likely need to sub the three defenders more often as they will more than likely be doing a lot of chasing. Play 3 rounds approximately 2-3 minutes each round.

Coaching Points:

- What should you do when your team has the ball? Make the field as big as possible to make it hard for the defenders. Move to create good angles

- Variation and Pass combination. Players should be using a variation of passing. Encourage quick combinations in tight areas and longer passes to switch the play and relieve the pressure.

- How can you create an opening? Make the defenders move

- What should we do if we find an opening between defenders? get through it by dribbling/passing

- What can players without the ball do to help their team split the defenders? Get in a window between two defenders so we can pass through it
