Arrival Activity

As players arrive they grab a ball and dribble around the 20x20 box (adjustable to suit player age, size and numbers). Bibs are dictated to players on arrival in preparation for the session, by the assistant coach.

The assistant coach calls out commands, such as Cruyff Turn, all players then demonstrate that particular skill. Coach cycles through various turns, skills and ball mastery techniques, and picking up on any players that need feedback.

When the lead coach has set up the session and ready to take the players, he introduces the topic during their ball mastery work. Potential to use Q&A to see what the players already know regarding the topic.

Blue Team are coached - In Possession on Attacking the Final Third

The red team are managed - Out of Possession on Defending the Final Third

Balls are fed in by the coach at Red defensive goal line

This is more practice for the defence to organise themselves when under attack. Again, they need to stay compact and force out wide, and prevent shots, and crosses into the box. We are also looking for the attacking side to combine well and create scoring opportunities.

When/if the Reds win back possession, they have a 6 second countdown to score in the opposition mini goals from anywhere, or if they play the ball out, the play begins again with the coach from the Blue goal line.

Opposition problem

This concentrates much more on the pitch geography and the immediate threat within the final third.

The Red defending team must work together as a tight unit, particularly the defensive three, to stay compact and force the opposition out wide. They must close down and prevent entries into the final third. As soon as the Blues are attacking, the Red midfield should be tracking back to help the defence.

Progression/Regression

Two touch for the attacking side - will encourage speed of pass and finding space and cause problems for the defending side to deal with the speed of play with attacking side overload.

A time limit of 10 seconds or every player must touch the ball at least once before progression or score, for the attacking side to create opportunity for the shot - if the attacking side are creating too much success.

2 x Goals

The attacking team will have a countdown of 10 seconds to shoot once they have entered the opposition final third, and a player can only score with their first touch.

Opposition problem

The defending team must work together as a tight unit, particularly the defensive three, to stay compact and force the opposition out wide. They must close down and prevent entries into the final third. As soon as the attacking team begin their progress, the defending midfield should be tracking back to help the defence.

Here particularly we are looking at the central midfield pair to sort out who is the CAM and who is the CDM. The wingers need to drop deeper for the ball but attack and drive forward whenever possible.

We want the defence to keep a high line to close the lines between themselves and support the midfield. The GK's must also be aware of balls over the top of the defence, and so must always be mindful of their starting position.
