4-4-2 Defending Normal Press

4-4-2 Diamond with normal bite line.

When the opponent CB's have the ball, can our 2 central strikers force them to play into the middle where we outnumber them with our extra midfielder to win the ball and transition to attack.

If the CB's do play wide to a FB, our 4 midfielders shift across the middle to release either our right or left midfielder to press opponent FB.

Our 10 will mark their 6.

Our weak side midfielder will drop and tuck in to mark opponent 8

Our 6 will mark their 10.

CAN WE CLOSE THEM DOWN AND CAN OUR STRIKERS OR ATTACKING MID DOUBLE DOWN TO WIN THE BALL ON THE FLANK OR THROUGH THE MIDDLE?

If they are able to switch out to the other side we shift across the middle again to release our other midfielder in the diamond to press the new FB in possession.

Our 6 shifts across to mark their 8.

Our weak side midfielder drops and tucks in to mark their 10.

Our 10 will stay marking their 6.

(These are guidelines. Marking assignments will vary throughout the match)

IF they break through this midfield defensive block, we drop and get numbers behind the ball and recreate this same formation lower down the pitch in our own defensive 3rd.

2 central strikers stay higher up the pitch and staggered, one high one low - as outlets to counter attack with.

**COMMUNICATION IS KEY

4-4-2 Defending High Press

IF we decide to press high (usually on opposition goal kicks), our 2 central strikers split to cover passing lanes to opponent FB's.

Our 10 presses the CB in possession with a curved run to prevent switch out to weak side CB.

Our Striker and 10 squeeze CB in possession.

Our FB shifts onto opponent FB.

Our Strong side CB shifts onto opponent Winger.

Our Weak side CB marks opponent striker.

CAN WE WIN IT IN OPPONENTS DEFENSIVE 3RD?

CAN WE DOUBLE DOWN?

IF we cannot win it, we drop off and get numbers behind the ball to get back into our normal pressing shape.

**COMMUNICATION IS KEY**
