If you are too near your line, the striker has too much of the goal to aim at.
If you are too close, he will be able to go around you.

It is about covering as much of the goal as you can without committing yourself and being easy to lob or go around. As the striker gets nearer to goal, you move according to the distance the ball is away from him. The bigger the touches he takes, the quicker you can advance. If he takes too big a touch, you can pounce.

Staying on your line gives the striker too much of the goal available.
You are also not putting any pressure on him if you are static.

Ball out wide - correct position
When attacker is coming from the angle of 18yard box.
look to be 50% of the way between the ball and the goal.
Be ready to anticipate any heavy touch and close that space down - lead with the hands if that happens.
In this distance you are still in a good space to move your feet if the striker tries to go around you.
Stay upright and big as long as you can - make him do something great, don't give him an easy goal.
Knees slightly bent so you can move and adjust quickly.
