PRINCIPLES OF PLAY
• Running with the ball
• Recognising space
• Speed
3v2 TO GOAL
• This practice is a 3v2 to goal, where an attacking team of three must take advantage of an overload against two defenders to create chances to score past a goalkeeper.
• Players are under pressure from defenders, with a requirement to complete the task quickly
COACHING DETAIL: TECHNICAL
SPEED
• As with any counter-attack, speed is king. Consider the types of touches used, how many backwards/sidewards passes there are, and the types of run going forward.
DECISION-MAKING
• Players must recognise when to attack 1v1, when to play a pass into the free player (making use of the 3v2) or when to change the angles of the ball to play to another teammate.
• Teammates must recognise when to make overlaps, underlaps and third-man runs to help the player on the ball.
• Always provide width and a threat in behind to move the opposition defenders and open up space to attack.
ANGLES & LENGTH OF TOUCHES
• Highlight the importance of how diagonal forward touches can attract defenders into 1v1 situations.
• Once in 1v1 situations, stress how longer touches can help a player escape the challenge and explode into space.
COACHING DETAIL: DEFENDING
DISTANCE BETWEEN PLAYERS
• As always, it is important to manage the opposition team to allow for work on your main areas of focus.
• Manage the space between defenders to make split passes harder. This also forces the ball outside, meaning the attacking players must be creative to find ways to move the defenders to allow for central passes.

FUNCTION
• This practice is a 3v2 to goal.
• The practice starts with a long pass from the goalkeeper into one of the three designated attackers (A) – as in Diagram 1. As the receiver takes their first touch, the two defenders (B) become live.
• The three attackers attempt to attack the goal and score in as little time as possible – such as in Diagram 2, for example. • If the defenders win the ball, they should attempt to pass into one of the two mini-goals at the opposite end of the playing area, from where the attackers start.
• Play always restarts with a longer pass from the goalkeeper.
• Progress the practice to involve specific runs, overlaps, underlaps or third-man runs.
• Alternatively, progress by having touches or time limits.
