Football/Soccer Session (Academy Sessions): Role of the 1st Defender
Description
What:
- Putting pressure on the attacking player quickly and with purpose to deny, delay and cause predictive behavior
Where:
- All parts of the field
Who:
- The closest defending player to the ball
When:
- When the attacker is looking to penetrate with dribble
Why:
- To prevent the advancement of the ball in a 1v1 situation.

Organization:
- 6vs3 Ideally if not 3vs2 4vs2 5vs3
- 4 Mini goals on the corner of the field
- Rotate after 3 minutes
Instructions:
- Attacking Team (6) will look to combine 6 passes for 1 point. If 4v2, combine 4 passes to earn a point
- Defending team look to win the ball and score in the mini-goals
- Play for 3 minutes.
Coaching Points/Questions:
- Close down the space
- Force the attacker to make a decision
- How can we regain possession of the ball?
- What are the cues for me to make the tackle?
- What does putting pressure on the player do? If you don't what do they have?

- 3 Teams
- 2 Squares (25x20)
- 2 Defending Teams - 2 attacking teams
- 1 ball per attacking team
- 1 attacking and 1 defending team in each square
Instructions:
- Attacking Teams look to score points by getting the ball across the grid by dribbling or passing.
- 1 point every time the ball makes it across the square
- Defending team gets 1 point if they steal the ball and score in one of the goals
- 1 round will be three rotations 60-90 seconds
- Add up scores from all three rotations for the winner
