Play Phase (15 mins)

Wide Channel Game.

Both teams look to score in the central goals (directional game). Before they can score / take a shot on goal the ball must enter one of the two wide channels on the pitch.

Coaching Points

  • Emphasize creating space off of the ball, attacking the space out wide when we have a good scenario i.e. 1v1, 2v1,
  • If we are crowded in possession what should we think of doing?
  • When we get out wide, show me on the ball how we can be positive and how our team mates can create space or support runs.

Progressions

  • Player that kicked the ball now needs to chase so there is an overload.

Player 2 starts the practice by passing the ball into player #6 who opens up to play wide into player #11.

Player 11 then drive down the line before providing a cross for the #9, #10 and #7 to attack and finish.

Players follow their pass to the next position 2 - 6 - 11 - 10 - 9 - 7 - 2.

Switch the start point to the opposite side to get service and crosses from both sides of the pitch.

Progression

  • Different patterns of play during build up play before the cross
  • Add to defenders - 1v1 when wide player gets the ball / two defenders who defend the cross in the box

Coaching Points

  • Quality / type of cross into the box
  • Body shape - hips around the ball
  • Speed, angle and timing of run into the box

Skill Phase - 3v2 Wave / 4v3 Wave (20 mins)

Skill Phase

The Red player next to the goal starts the game by dribbling out into a 3v2 situation. Both wide players provide support to the central player and look to make attacking runs off the ball to receive it and score. The Attacking team should look to create a goal scoring opportunity quickly with the overload.  If the blues win the ball they look to counter attack to the opposite end. Each team gets 1 point if they are successful. Once the attack is over start a new attack from the opposite side and the other 2 blue defenders must defend their goal in a 3v2.

Coaching Points

  • Be positive and drive towards the goal when possible.
  • Be creative with attacking runs to pull defenders into bad areas and create space for others.
  • How can the player who  passed the ball create good supporting options for their team mates.
  • How can we speed up our attack?
Progressions:
  • 4v 3 - Add another Defender for the Blue team and a Striker for the Red team.
