Four 10x10 areas
Teams split evenly with players working in pairs with a ball between them and their partner
Activity Description
- To start, the reds will be the attackers and must try to hide the ball from the blues but are instructed not to touch the ball.
- The blues will be the defenders and must try and touch the ball with their hands
- Every time the blue players manages to touch the ball they earn 1 point
- Roles will be rotated after 45s (coach discretion)
Coaching points
- What body parts can we use to help us hide the ball? (Arms = out like steel beams, Hands = making contact with other player, Hips between defender and the ball)
- Show difference between being tall or small (tall = easy to move, Small = harder to move)
- How can I position myself to create the biggest barrier between the ball and the defender?
- Furthest foot dribbling when shielding. Why?
- Can the defending players change direction to try and touch the ball to encourage the attacker to move their feet
- For progression ask players to think about what skills they can use from their toolbox to escape from the defender?
Progression
- In each grid, there will be two games of 1v1. If players dribble outside of their grid their partner gets the ball. The player who has the ball at the end of the 45 seconds will be given a point.
- Change partners if appropriate to increase the difficulty for specific players
Technical
- 1v1 skills to outplay the opponent
- Dribbling mechanics if appropriate, eyes up to find space, ball close, change direction etc
Tactical
- If there is limited time left can you hide the ball from the opponent to get 1 point
Physical
- Using different body parts to protect the ball

Two 20x16 grids
Two equal teams
6 Balls
Activity Description- Similar to the last activity but now there are two stadiums one for each team. - Players pair up with a different partner to the previous activities and must try to win the ball from their partner and dribble it to their home stadium.
- Reds home stadium = red area
- Blue home stadium = blue area
- The player with the ball in their home stadium will earn a point
- To encourage hiding the ball from their opponent if a player can hide it and escape successfully from their partner using a skill they will earn 1 personal point
Coaching points- Hide the ball using our body - Using our skills from our toolbox to escape
- When might be a good time to hide the ball? Close to line. How can we get of that situation?
Progressions
If certain players need further challenge you can play 1v2
Make areas smaller to encourage more moments where the player hides their football
Technical/Tactical
- Outplay opponent
Psychological
- Confidence to stay on the ball
- Trying new skills
Physical
- 1v1s are demanding so important to ensure rounds are timed and are short with plenty of rest. Use the rest periods to address appropriate coaching points.

Two 32x16 areas
4 mini goals
2 footballs (with extra by each goal)
Activity Description
- Normal SSGs with limited instruction from the coach
- Plenty of encouragement for players to hide the ball
Progressions
- Play 5-6 minute games with teams rotating after each break.
Social
- In between breaks ask players to have team talks before the restart. Give them ideas on what to ask one another if they are finding it difficult (game plan, using 2v1 moves, 1v1 moves etc)
Psychological
- Observe whether players are trying new things worked on during the session (e.g., hiding the ball, 1v1 moves when hiding). Encourage them to do so if not.
Technical/Tactical/Phys
- Observe if players are using the correct parts of their body when hiding the ball. Are they creating small or big barriers between them and the defender?
- Are players using their 1v1 moves to beat the defender when facing them up?
- Are dribbling mechanics being used - Change of direction/Speed etc?

Two sets of bibs evenly split up (eg., 6 blue , 6 red)
Area size - 20x20 circular area
Activity 1 Description
Players are paired up with a player of an opposite colour bib.
One partner will act as the bridge and will be holding a high plank position.
The other partner will be the commando and crawl under the bridge 5x.
The pair who complete the activity first win one point.
Roles will be rotated after each round
Coaching points
- When planking ask players to keep their back flat and their arms straight
- When crawling ask players to keep low to the ground
Progression
-After the commando crawls underneath their partners' bridge 5x to finish they must try and lightly sit on their partners back. (Coaches discretion).
- After a player goes crawls underneath their partners' bridge they must then move clockwise and crawl underneath the next bridge until they return back to their partner. Alternatively, this can be done in a random fashion with players scattered around a specific area, players could then try to crawl under as many bridges as they can.
- Ball could be used where players dribble around the area and have to pass the ball underneath the bridge before crawling under it.
