General Practice; In Possession Creating and Exploit Scoring Opportunities

Understand how to exploit scoring opportunities and achieve success vs the opposition.

Organisation / Area Size:

  • x2 18 yd boxes mirror image opposite one another.
  • x2 teams with two different colour bibs.
  • x20 balls with the coach and asst coach on the outside of the area.
  • x2 4 minute terminals with a 1 minute break between.
Explanation:

Each team will attempt to create scoring opportunities by exploiting the space and area around them.  This will be done in a wave practice with the starting team receiving a ball from the coach in a 1vsGK situation.  As soon as the red team shoot; a ball is played to either one of two blue players creating a 1v2 situation.  As soon as the ball is no longer live, two more reds join the practice making it a 3v2 situation.  The final wave is a 3v4 situation and then the practice resets to a 1vGK.

How:

The information to both teams will remain the same throughout the practice as it is a general practice and the wave process may start from either end.  This will allow for high repetition and lots of ball rolling time throughout the practice.  During the terminal break the red team will engage with the lead coach whilst the blue team engage with the asst coach.  The focus on this break will be a quick dynamic discussion on what is working but how can we improve our output as players.

Challenges, Conditions & Targets:

  • Conditions; Can we drive past the halfway line and score inside 8 seconds.

  • 1st progression; Can we be brave and be creative in our decision making when we have an overload?
  • 2nd progression; Can we think about different scoring areas and where might be the best possible assisting areas be (angled forward passes, goal line cut backs, pin and setting).
  • Challenges; Can we encourage our first touch to play forward with purpose, can we limit our touch on the ball and encourage more quick combinations, remain onside?
  • Targets; Attacking win a point for every goal, Defending win a point for every shot saved by the keeper or deflected (good block away from goal).
Key Points:

In possession
  • First touch to be forward.
  • Can we create early (space, angles, combinations) fast passing, underlaps, overlaps etc.
  • High goal scoring opportunities from key pitch assisting areas.
  • Be positive.
  • How can we force the defending team to commit to a tackle or direction.
Out of possession
  • Press quickly.
  • Stay narrow.
  • leave the furthest player.
Interventions:
  • Concurrent feedback.
  • Terminal dynamic player feedback.
  • Coaching process.
