BUILD UP PLAY - Penetration pass between zones/lines of midfield (10 mins)

 

Set Up:

  • 3 teams (3 v 3 v 3 +1) 10 players
  • 2 teams in possession - 1 team pressing and trying to win the ball
  • 2 goals no keepers
  • 8 x flat discs
  • Footballs are placed side of the pitch in midfield zone

Timings:

  • 15-20 minutes

Organisation:

  • Ball starts with red team keeping possession in their area, always looking for the opportunity to play a penetrating ball forward to opposite end zone.
  • If the ball can be switched into the opposite grid the game restarts with blue team looking to keep possession and playing a penetrative pass forward to opposite end zone.  A yellow player will move across into the end zone from midfield zone.
  • Defenders (yellow and 1 x green neutral) look to win the ball and score in goals as ball passed through midfield zone.
  • if a central player wins the ball, they may score in either goal
  • Start with no defenders

Coaching Points:

  • Technical
  • First touch - Into space away from defenders - Forward to play forward - To protect the ball
  • Striking the ball - To switch play - To penetrate the line - To finish on goal
  • 1v1 - To protect the ball - To beat the player and create pass or space
  • Tactical
  • Be patient in possession when playing the killer pass
  • Defender create a team press using central players to block passing lines
  • Central players stay compact and slide quickly so as not to allow opposition space to play through  
  • Communication between attackers and defenders
  • Know your next move before receiving the pass
  • Keep scanning to know defenders' positions in middle 3rd
  • Straight pass or angled pass
SOCHANGEIT:

 

 

  • Can start with no defenders and progress into 1 or 2 pressing players
  • Can rotate teams when they lose the ball or add in a time limit for even defending time.
  • Can have 2 in and 2 out for defenders in each zone.  2 in middle zone, 2 in defending zone where has possession.

Progression 1:

  • Add 1 defender to possession zone
  • As ball moves to opposite end zone a defender from middle zone moves into possession zone, 1 defender from zone ball has moved from moves into middle zone

PENETRATION - END ZONE - Forward pass or run to penetrate (20 mins)

Set Up:

  • 35m x 30m with two 10m end zones. Players are split into two teams and positioned in groups of four

    outside the end zone as shown above.

Timings:

  • 15-20 min

 

Organisation:

  • Play begins with the coach serving the ball into either team's end zone. Once the ball is played, four players from each end zone enter the middle zone of the area.
  • In this middle zone, the team in possession looks to break into the opposition's end zone by either dribbling or passing to a teammate. If the opposing team wins the ball, they attempt to do the same. 
  • The end zone line is played as offside, so players must run onto any pass played into the zone.
  • If the ball goes out of play, the game is dead, and play resumes with the coach serving another ball to 5 players a team in end zone.
  • Players are encouraged to play quick 2-3 touch max.

Coaching Points:

In Possession

  • Quick combination play
  • Using width to stretch the opposition and create gaps to exploit
  • Making runs through gaps
  • Looking to shift the ball on the diagonal
  • Positive play ("be brave")

Out of Possession

  • Aggressive pressing t open up space
  • Communication, first / second defender, press or delay or cover passing lane.

SOCHANGEIT

  • Introduction of a red neutral player in the middle. This enables the team in possession to play 6 v 4.
  • Make the area narrower.

Set Up:

  • 45 x 30 yard 
  • 3 areas marked 3rds (15 yard each)

  • 8 x flat markers 
  • 2 x Goals with or without keepers
  • 4 v 4

Timings:

  • 15-20 min

 

Organisation:

  • Play starts with the keeper/player playing out from goal
  • Players in possession look to play through the thirds quickly
  • Possession must be maintained in each third before team can score
  • Restart from keeper if game breaks down
  • 1 point per goal scored 
  • Alternate attacks between team, team with most points wins game

Coaching Points:

  • Technical
  • Run the ball - Attack space - Create the overload
  • Dribble - Ball away from defender and hip in way of defender
  • First Touch - Forward where possible - Into space and/or away from pressure
  • First Touch - Front foot / back foot?
  • 1v1 - To keep the ball - To beat the first defender
  • Striking/passing the ball - To penetrate - To create forward movement - To finish
  • Passing - Weight over ball, side of foot, ball on floor
  • Passing - Angle balls or straight pass
  • Passing - Thing about the corridor player would like to receive the ball
  • Tactical
  • Players always looking to get in a position to receive the ball and play forward
  • Midfielder always be in space between players to receive the ball
  • Midfielder always looking to start the attack quickly when receiving the ball - anticipation & vision
  • Look to create and use an overload to finish (2v1)  

 

Game rules - Attacking team starts the attack again every time they score, Each team gets 5 mins each to attack

Time - Introduce a time limit to score if teams taking too long in buildup phase
