This training session concentrates on passing and receiving techniques for high school freshman. (U14)

Passing/Receiving the ball (40 min)
Equipment: 8-11 soccer balls, 8 small cones
Set Up:
Dimensions: 30 x 30 yards outer area, 5 x 5 yard central area
· Divide players evenly into two groups
· Assign one group of players to the central area and the other group to the outer area
· Each outer player will be paired off with one central player.
· On coach’s command, outer player will pass to the inner player.
· Inner player will receive with inside of the right foot and pass the ball back to outer player with the same foot.
· Outer and inner player will continue passing to each other with inner player using the same receiving technique for 10 minutes.
· After receiving with the inside of the right foot for 10 minutes, the players will repeat the drill with the following receiving techniques for 10 minutes each:
a. Receive with the outside of the right foot and pass back with the same foot
b. Receive with the inside of the left foot and pass back with the same foot
c. Receive with the outside of the left foot and pass back with the same foot
Coaching Points:
· Players must receive the ball with the inside of the foot by having their foot sideways and toes up.
· Players must receive the ball with the outside of the foot by having their toes down and ankle locked.
· Players must cushion the ball on contact.
· Players must practice calling for the ball

Progression: Passing/Receiving In Sets (20 min)
Equipment: 8 small cones and 4 soccer balls
Set Up:
Dimensions: 30 x 30 yards outer area, 5 x 5 yard central area
· Divide players into two groups (central and outer)
· Assign one group of players to the central area with 4 players and the other group to the outer area with 8 players.
· Each pair of outer players will be paired off with one central player.
· On coach’s command, outer player (Player A) will pass to the inner player (Player B). Player B must check in for pass from Player A.
· Player B will receive with the inside of the right foot and pass the ball to player C with the same foot. Player C must check in for pass from Player B.
· Player C will receive with the inside of the right foot and pass the ball back to Player B with the same foot. Player B must check in for pass from Player C.
· Player B will receive with the inside of the right foot and pass the ball to Player A with the same foot. Player A must check in for pass from Player B.
· Player A receives the ball with the inside of the right foot and drill continues for 5 minutes.
· Repeat drill every 5 minutes using the next receiving technique on the list below until inside/outside of both feet have been used: (4 rounds of the drill at 5 minutes each - inside right, outside right, inside left, outside left)
a. Receive with the outside of the right foot and pass back with the same foot
b. Receive with the inside of the left foot and pass back with the same foot
c. Receive with the outside of the left foot and pass back with the same foot
Coaching Points:
· Players get in line with the ball.
· Players must receive the ball with the inside of the foot by having their foot sideways and toes up.
· Players must receive the ball with the outside of the foot by having their toes down and ankle locked.
· Players must cushion the ball on contact.
· Players must practice calling for the ball when checking in.

Small sided game 4v3+1 (20 min)
Equipment: Two large goals, one soccer ball, 2 different color bibs
Set Up:
Dimensions: 30 x 30 yard area, 2 large cones at the half-line
· Divide players into two teams of 4 (Team A and Team B). Each team wears one color of bib.
· Assign two additional players as goal keepers.
· In one half of the area, teams play 4 v 3 with Team A starting with 4 players and Team B having 3 players.
· If Team B gains possession of the ball, they must play forward into the other half and join the fourth member of the team quickly.
· Team A Retreats to the other half as well, but one player remains in the half while Team B attempts to score.
· Drill continues with teams moving forward and retreating based on possession until one team scores.
· Note: You can rotate sideline teams into the field after one team scores if running drill with more players.
Coaching Points:
· Players must move the ball with firm passes.
· Player must pass with the inside or outside of the feet.
· Players must receive the ball with the inside of the foot by having their foot sideways and toes up.
· Players must receive the ball with the outside of the foot by having their toes down and ankle locked.
· Players must cushion the ball on contact.
· Players must practice calling for the ball when checking in.
· Players must attempt to pass quickly and transition quickly.
· Players must be aware of space and passing opportunities.

Cool Down/Stretching (10 min)
Equipment: None
Set Up:
Dimensions: Entire field
Static Stretches
§ Standing quad stretch
§ Standing calf stretch
§ Seated groin and inner thigh stretch
§ Hip and lower back stretch
§ Seated hamstring stretch
§ Achilles tendon heel stretch
§ Simple shoulder stretch
After static stretches, coach will check in and dismiss players by:
· Discussing objectives of drills
· Discussing important reminders for the week
· Sharing Highs and Lows of the Day - players share their personal high points and low points of the day to build on empathy and community.
· Dismiss with team shout out "1...2...3..[team name]."
