Function (15 mins)

Objectives:

To create overloads using a midfield 3 and 2 wingers. The blue team must retain possession, and try to score goals, offering support in front and behind the play by ensuring players rotate when required.

Organisation:

Area Size - 65 x 45

Equipment - 12 Balls, 16 Orange Cones, 6 Red Cones (Ball Nest situated behind the feeder closer to the left mini goal), 2 Mini Goals, 1 Large Goal, 7 Blue Bibs, 6 Red Bibs, 1 Yellow Bib (Opposition Keeper), 1 Green Bib (Coach).

Players - 14 players (7v7);

Blue Team: CB(Feeder), 2 deep midfielders, CAM, Left Winger, Right Winger and a Striker.

Red Team: GK, RB, 2 x CB, 2 CM, and a Number 10.

Geography/Realism – Focus on the left side of midfield for the blues, pitch narrowed off on the right, with Blue Team Right winger tucked in.

Challenges:

Scoring System - the Blues need to score in the large goals, worth 1 point per goal. The Reds have 2 small goals in positions relative to where a striker and a right sided midfielder would be positioned, worth 1 point per goal.

Conditions - Blue CB (feeder cannot carry the ball out, must be a pass initially from behind the halfway line. 7-14 minutes into function, introduce 8 Seconds to score rule for Blues from first player receiving the ball. Allow game to flow, with throw in's and allow Reds to play out from the keeper if ball goes out of play, observe the individuals and the unit and coach where necessary.

Coaching Points - What, How, When, Where, Who and what if:

What opportunities to pass and receive the ball are available to ensure possession is retained and how can attacking opportunities are created. How can rotation of players be achieved to ensure support behind the play as well as in front, consider the individual and the unit, coaching distances, line of sight, on, off and around the ball. When should a player drop off? If a player decides to carry the ball forward another player can drop off to support. Why? It provides cover behind if possession is lost. When should a player move into space? When an opportunity opens up, the player should look to receive the ball in that area.

Urge the 3 midfielders and 2 wingers to not become static and provide a good level of rotation. E.g. if the LCM has to push forward during play, the CAM can drop off providing cover if it occurs more centrally. If it occurs out wide then the left winger could drop off.

What if the receiving players are pinned by the opposition, the CB (feeder) could bounce the ball off the receiver, upon the return pass, carry the ball forward into midfield, with the midfielder dropping off to cover the CB.

Via: Demonstrations, recreate scenarios, practice.

Coach individual and unit, on, off and around the ball.

Attacking key points:

Movement off the ball to receive the ball and support play, angles, distances, quality of first touch, quality of pass, body position, strongest foot to receive the ball, width and depth, decision making. Rotation of players.

Defending key points: Distance of support, narrow shape, support behind the play, rotation. If ball is lost, can the players win back the ball with ease, prevent presenting the opposition any opportunities to attack.

0-6 minutes: The Blues will play the ball from the CB (Feeder). Main Coaching points and demonstrations.

6-7 minutes: Interval, Cue cards for the Red Team to challenge the Blues further by instruction them, who and when to press, higher intensity.

7-14 minutes: Conditions applied, observe, coach indivuals during the play, stimulate decision making, Game flow realism.

14-15 minutes: debrief and change over to SSG.

Small Sided Game (15 mins)

Equipment: 12 Balls (inside the goals, Blue side), 16 Orange Cones, 2 Large Goals 8 Blue Bibs, 8 Red Bibs, 2 Yellow Bibs, 1 Green Bib (Coach).

Players - 18 Players; Blues GK-2-2-3-1 V Reds GK-4-2-1-1 (9 v 9). Pitch narrowed off due to Blues not using fullbacks and Reds not using wingers. Note: 11 v 11 would be Blue 1-4-2-3-1 and Reds 1-4-4-1-1.

Working with the Blue team playing through 2 CDM's and 1 CAM, into the Wingers. Using two thirds of the pitch.

Aims:

For the Blue side retain possession, creating midfield overloads, with players dropping in and providing support where necessary, and player rotation. Getting the ball out wide to the wingers into feet, retaining shape within the unit, support both in front and behind the play, ensuring if the ball is out wide on one side then wide player on opposite flank is tucked in, providing both support and compactness to the unit.

Targets: Blues and Reds have to score, each goal worth 1 point. During the session conditions will be introduced, with Blues having 8 seconds to score from the first pass made, If the lose the ball, but win it back, the coaches discretion on how many seconds they have to score. Based on position. Blue centrebacks cannot carry the ball out from the back, however they may rotate with a midfeilder if they can play a 1-2 pass and the midfielder drops in to cover them. Reds can gain points by gettin the ball into their number 9.

Session Timeline:

15-17 minutes: Bring in the additional centreback for the blue team along with the goalkeeper and the red teams number 9. Deliver an explanation of the ssg and conditions.

17-22 minutes: use real interventions with coaching process where needed. Allow for the game to flow, but ensure the players remain aware of the need for quality, positioning of the wide players for the blues is crucial with one tucking in to play more narrow when the other winger is in possession out wide on the opposite side or the ball is being played around the opposite side of the pitch, rather than wide hugging the touchline. Movement into spaces to create overloads, with rotation of the midfield 3, i.e. CAM dropping when the CDM carries the ball forward, thus enabling more passing options whilst drawing opposition players out of position. Using quick diagonal passes into dangerous positions for the wingers to exploit. for the 3 midfielders, ensure movement off the ball, find space away from markers but become available to receive a pass, try to always be available. Passes should be varied with some into feet, and others into the space where teammate is communicating they would like the ball played. 2 deep midfielders have to share the work load, with 1 pressing to support the attack, and 1 holding. if a deep midfielder has run into an offensive position, perhaps the CAM can drop off, or the winger drop deeper, providing an option in behind if the pass into the striker or shot on goal cannot be created or possession is lost. The striker can drop off allowing the CAM to overlap into the space, or for the winger to get between the defenders.

22-23 minutes: Allow the reds to gain points by getting the ball into the no9 with the 9 able to get the ball under control. This should encourage the blues to provide better support behind the play.

23-29 minutes: Coaching process where needed, not more than one, with greater emphasise on the flow of the game.

29-30 minutes: Review feedback from players, questions, recap.
