Pass/ Dribble amd FINISH

Practice Organisation

  • Activity 1 is a receiving exercise that ends with a finish on goal
  • Activity 2 is a dribbling exercise that also ends with a finish

Detail

  • Activity 1: player receives a pass, attacks the gate, skill move and a finish on goal
  • Activity 2: player practices the skill move on a still object and also ends with a finish

Key Coaching Points

  • Soft first touch to receive the ball under control, attack the defender and perform a well timed skill move
  • Accelerate towards goal after the skill move and encourage an accurate finish

3v2 to Goal (20 mins)

Practice Organization

  • Use about half of a regulation pitch (7v7 with break-out line in our case)
  • 3 lines at the half line that represent the #9 (Target Forward) and the #7/11 (Winger)
  • 2 lines behind the ball where the 18 yd box meets the end line representing the #4/5 (Center Back)
  • 1 GK - preferably a GK from the team if the numbers work
  • All balls start at the #9 with a pass

Detail

  • The ball starts at the #9's foot.  To start the play, he MUST play a pass first, he CANNOT dribble to start - let's create good passing habits from the start!  Once the ball is in play, the objective is to score as quickly as possible (count down from 5 Mississippi's to create urgency).  Once the #9 plays a pass, the DEF may come out and begin play.  From here, it is just a regular 3v2 to goal.  The DEF only have to clear it out to win the play - no mini-goals because we want a ton of repetition!

Key Coaching Points

  • Intentionally go forward with URGENCY
  • Get in position to support your teammate with the ball
  • Make quick decisions with the ball
  • In a 1v1, player with the ball has advantage - TAKE THE DEF ON!
  • Weight/accuracy passes
  • Communication

Midfield wide layers building the attack (30 mins)

Practice Organization

  • 5v4 to Goal - utilize half of regulation size pitched (adjust for age/skill level)
  • The team of 5 will have 1 player start on each of the designated cones; each cones represents a different position on the field
  • The team of 4 will form a flat line back four defensive unit, with a Goalkeeper
  • 2 mini-goals should be placed at half-field facing the defenders

Detail

  • One of the central midfielders will play a ball to a target forwards foot.  That target forward will settle the ball, turn, and look to play to one of the players out wide making a run down the flank.  All 5 attacking players will make runs to goal after this sequence - near post, far post, top of the D, trash collector, etc.  The ATT are trying to score on the big goal.
  • The DEF job is to win the ball and work it out of the back, primarily through the shaded areas marked above.  We want to encourage our outside backs when they win the ball out wide, to drive up the sideline with a burst of speed and start our attack up.  The DEF are trying to simulate this by winning the ball, driving up the field a couple yards, then passing the ball into the bownet while the ATT tries to win the ball back.

Key Coaching Points

  • Keep the defensive shape (half-moon, banana are both good terms to repeat)
  • Pressure/cover
  • Proper shifting and spacing
  • Communication
  • Get the GK's feet involved
