Organisation (Practice Layout & Transition)

See the guidance at the top of this page to understand why you are not seeing interactive Football/Soccer images.
Objective
To develop players’ decision-making around switching play in realistic game scenarios, using wide channels and incentivised scoring to encourage width, movement, and intelligent play.
Setup
Format: 7v7 or 8v8
Pitch Layout:
Full playing area with wide channels marked on both flanks.
1 player from each team is locked into each wide channel (wingers).
2 main goals at either end (standard goals).
2 mini goals inside the wide channels (1 per team).
Scoring System
1 point – Goal scored in the main goal.
2 points – Goal scored in the mini goal within the channel.
3 points – Goal scored directly from a cross.
Coaching Focus
When to Switch Play:
Recognise congested areas in central zones or on one wing.
Scan and identify space on the opposite side.
Using the Channels:
Time passes into channels for wingers to run onto.
Encourage early switches before pressure builds.
Creating Width:
Wingers must stay wide and be available.
Central players should look to release the ball wide under pressure.
Challenges for Players
Can you switch the play when the central areas or a flank becomes overloaded?
Can you release the winger with a ball they can run onto, rather than to feet?
Can you score in different ways using the mini goals or by delivering crosses?
Progressions / Variations
Allow wingers to come inside occasionally to vary their movement.
Introduce a neutral CM or floating player to help facilitate switches.
Add a time constraint on possession to increase urgency.
Coaching Points
Scanning: Players must be aware of space across the pitch.
Speed of Play: Quick passing and decision-making before pressure arrives.
Body Position: Open up to allow for switches.
Communication: Wingers and central players must give cues for passes.
