Primary Focus
This skilled practice develops players’ ability to switch play under pressure and for defenders to block passing lanes. Blue players aim to move the ball across the pitch, while red defenders coordinate to prevent switches.
Area Size
Same rectangular area (30m x 25m) with the removal of white cones, creating three open zones across the pitch. Four mini goals are positioned outside the area.
Player Numbers
Ten players: six blue attackers and four red defenders in the middle.
Explanation
Blue players try to switch play from one side to the other, moving the ball through the central red defenders. Reds block passing lanes and maintain compact positioning to prevent switches. If the ball moves between blue players, defenders adjust their positions to continue covering key passing lanes.
Conditions
Activity is continuous, with red defenders maintaining shape and coverage in the central zone while blues attempt to switch play.
Progression
Allow one red player to press into the blue zones. If they win possession, they can attack any of the four mini goals outside the area, adding a scoring incentive and transition challenge.
Regressions
Limit red pressing to the central zone only, giving blues more time and space to complete switches.
Key Points
Blues should scan and switch quickly to exploit gaps. Reds must communicate, maintain compactness, and block central passing lanes. Quick role adjustments are crucial to maintain defensive coverage while allowing realistic attacking practice.

Technical (10 mins)
Primary Focus
This technical practice develops players’ ability to defend against a switch of play by improving pressing and covering movements. Defenders work in pairs where one applies pressure to the ball while the other provides cover and blocks passing lanes to prevent switches across the pitch.
Area Size
The practice uses a rectangular area of approximately 30m x 25m, divided into six vertical zones. The zones create clear channels to structure positioning and highlight potential switching directions.
Player Numbers
Ten players participate: six blue attackers and four red defenders. Four blue players in the left zones (two top, two bottom), and two blue players in the far right zones act as switching targets. Four red defenders occupy the central zones (two top, two bottom), forming pairs in mirrored channels.
Explanation
Each blue pair in the left zones start with possession, aiming to switch play to the blue player on the far right. In each channel, one red defender presses the ball while the second provides cover, blocking passing lanes. When the ball moves between blue players, defenders rotate roles: the covering defender presses the ball, and the original presser drops into cover. This rotation continues in both top and bottom channels. This is a mirrored practice so two groups working at the same time.
Conditions
Activity runs in two channels simultaneously. Defenders must coordinate so one presses the ball while the other blocks the passing lane.
Challenges
Defenders must time pressure effectively, maintain correct body angles, and protect central passing lanes through coordinated positioning.
Progressions
Limit blue players to two touches to increase tempo and require quicker defensive reactions.
Regressions
Allow unlimited touches to slow play, giving defenders more time to press and cover. Defender cannot press, intercept only.
Key Points
Press quickly but under control, approaching at angles that block switches. Covering defenders position slightly deeper and inside to protect central space. Communication is essential for smooth rotations and compact defensive structure.
