Session Objective
If we can't attack centrally, can we create goal scoring opportunities from wide areas.
Set Up
Create a field 55 (long) x 55 (wide) with a 3 metre wide gate on the half way on either side.
Reds set up - 1xGK, 3xCM, 2xWingers, 1x ST (ST plays in opposite half)
Blue set up - 1xGK, 2xFB, 2xCB 2xCM (one CM in opposite half)
How to Play
Each team has one ball and play starts with the GK at the end. Both teams play at the same time.
There are two ways you can get through to the attacking half
1) A ball to feet that is dribbled through the gate with one touch
2) A through ball played to a wide player to run on to with one touch (wide player must run through gate)
- If you can't do this straight away, combine until you can.
- At least one pass in attacking half before finishing against the GK.
- Once you've had a shot/scored, quickly get shape in your own half and start again from your GK.
Notes:
- If one gate is blocked, quickly switch to the other side
- If gate is open, play a pass that allows wide player to go forward with first touch
- If highest player comes short to support, someone run in behind.
Progressions
- play directly into other half into highest player for quick pass to on-coming wide player for combination and shot!

Set Up
Create two pitches 15 x 20m with a halfway line and a mini goal at each end. Use cones to create two gates on the halfway line.
Place extra balls around the area.
How to Play
- The attacking team (blue) play 3v2 in one half and are looking for an opportunity to transfer the ball to the other half by:
- dribbling through one of the gates
- receiving a through ball (player must travel through gate but ball doesn't have to)
- passing directly into the attacker in the attacking half (can't dribble through the middle).
Once the ball is in the attacking half, try to score as quickly as possible. Two attackers can join to support and 1 defender can recover creating a 3v2 in the other half.
The defending team score by getting a player on the ball outside of the field.
If the ball goes dead, start again with the attacking team playing 3v2.
If attackers score a goal - 1 point
If defenders get a player on the ball outside of the field - 1 point
Team Task:
Today we are working on our ability to attack in wide areas if we can't play forward centrally
Notes:
#8,7,11 - One attacker must stay in own half for defensive cover but must support play from behind
#8,7,11 - Look to play forward centrally first, if not quickly play wide
#7,11 - Look to receive beyond your markers
#8,7,11 - If highest player comes short, someone get in behind
#8,7,11 - Provide quick support to attack from in front and with runs in behind
#8,7,11v- Drive forward if space in front
#7,11,9 - Get free to receive the ball beyond opponent’s defence
#9 - Get into positions to link up with midfielders and forwards
#9 - Combine with others in front of the defensive line to get someone beyond the defensive line
ALL - Get into goal scoring positions

Set Up
- Use half a pitch with two 8m wide zones.
- Big goal at one and & two small goals on the half way line replicating wingers for reds.
- Play 8v8
- Red: GK, FB's, CB's, CM x2, ST
- Blue: FB's, CB x1, CM x3, Wingers, ST
How to Play
- Starting point with neutral passing to any blue player.
- Blue are trying to score a regular goal.
- Red score by passing into one of the small goals or playing to neutral & getting it back.
- Neutral plays for the team in possession.
- Blue FB's & #6 plays on 2 touch max (no direct opposition).
- If one FB goes, the other must stay for defensive balance. If both FB go, 2 CM must stay.
Team task
If we can't play through the middle, can we hurt them from wide areas.
Player Tasks
Full Backs #2/5
- Look for furthest forward pass
- Support WF in front or with over/under-lapping run
- Deliver balls for attackers into dangerous spaces.
- Balance in attack to recognise when to join or cover
Centre Midfield #6/#8
- Can one central midfielder come short and one move higher
- Look to hurt the opposition with balls in behind their defensive line to attackers
- Get into a position where you can support the ball into forward players in front or behind defensive lines
- If we can't attack down one side, find a position where you can receive and quickly switch to the opposite side
- Interchanging movement with other midfielders to create space to receive
- Get into goal scoring positions
- Recognise when to join attack and when to cover
- If the ST comes short to receive, can one of you look to get in behind (3rd man running)
Wingers #7/#11
- If the ball is on your side of the pitch can you get into a wide position, if the balls on the opposite side can you find a position to receive centrally?
- Look to receive beyond the defensive line (between FB & CB) or to feet in space
- Get into goal scoring positions when the ball is being delivered from the opposite side
- Aggressively look to beat defenders in 1v1’s
- Move inside/outside to create space for FB to make an over or under lapping run
- If there is a set back from the striker, can at least one of us (inc #10) get in position of receive in behind?
Striker #9
- Can you position yourself high up the pitch to receive or threaten in behind the opposition defence?
- Combine with others in front of the defensive line to get someone beyond the defensive line
- Get into goal scoring positions in and around the opposition penalty area
- If you get turned facing forward, dribble effectively to engage defenders in 1v1s
- If you have no options when you receive the ball, pin and protect until you do. If there is an option 1st time, play it.
