Fix the Box, Stretch the Back 5 (5 mins)

Adaptation: 4‑3‑3 vs 3‑4‑2‑1 (Box + 2) Midfield

Tactical Problem to Solve

Against a 3‑4‑2‑1, the opposition central structure often becomes:

  • A box of 4 (double pivot + two narrow 10s)
  • Protected by 3 CBs
  • Wing-backs ready to jump or recover

Your 4‑3‑3 must:

  • Access central zones without forcing
  • Exploit half-spaces
  • Pin the back three while disorganising the box

Opposition Structure (Defensive Reference)

9 10 10 6 8 WB CB CB CB WB

  • 6 + 8 = double pivot
  • Two narrow 10s protect zone 14
  • Wing-backs decide whether to jump or stay

Base Organisation (Adjusted)

Area: 50 x 35m (slightly longer for depth runs)
Players:

  • Attacking 4‑3‑3: 8–9
  • Defending 3‑4‑2‑1: 6–7 (rotated)

Attacking Team (4‑3‑3)

  • 2 CBs
  • 1 FB (ball side) + 1 FB (weak side, higher)
  • #6 (single pivot)
  • #8 (right) + #8 (left)
  • 1 winger (ball side)
  • 1 #9 or false 9

Defending Team

  • Box midfield = 2 pivots + 2 narrow 10s
    • 1 CB stepping in OR managed back line (context dependent)
  • Wing-backs initially locked outside (later free)

Progression 1 – Fix the Box, Stretch the Back 5

Objective

Move the box + back three together, creating half-space access.

Conditions

  • Back 3 stay compact (no stepping initially)
  • Wing-backs locked in wide channels
  • Attacking goal = split pass into half-space OR switch to free FB

Key 4‑3‑3 Behaviours

CBs

  • Circulate to fix first line
  • Pass with disguise into #8 or winger inside

#6

  • Stay connected underneath the box
  • Bounce passes to change angle

Ball-side #8

  • Start high in half-space to pin pivot
  • Drop late into pocket

Opposite FB

  • Stay high → force far wing-back to hold width

Success looks like

  • Narrow 10s are attracted inside
  • Half-space opens beside pivot
  • Ball played inside, not forced wide

    Disorganise the Box + 10s (5 mins)

    Progression 2 – Disorganise the Box + 10s

    Objective

Exploit the double responsibility of the opposition 10s.

    New Conditions

    • Defensive 10s now allowed to press freely
    • Attacking goals only count if:
      • A receiving player plays forward within 2 touches
      • OR a third-man action eliminates one of the narrow 10s

    Tactical Triggers (Teach Explicitly)

    • Winger inside → FB outside
      • Drags wing-back
      • Forces pivot to slide
    • #9 drops → far #8 runs
      • Pins CB
      • Exploits blindside of the box
    • Bounce through #6
      • Repositions the box before re-entry

    Coaching Detail

    • “Who is responsible for you?”
    • “Are you being picked up by a pivot or a 10?”
    • “If the 10 jumps — where is the free man?”

    Success looks like

    • One of the box midfield steps out
    • Far-side interior is untracked
    • Progression happens centrally, not via hopeful crosses

Breaking the Back Three (Directional) (5 mins)

Progression 3 – Breaking the Back Three (Directional)

    Objective

Convert box dis-organisation into depth + chances.

    Setup Changes

    • Add 2 mini goals split wide behind back three
    • Wing-backs now free to recover
    • Defenders counter if they win it

    Conditions

    • Attacking team has 8–10 seconds to finish after breaking the box
    • Goals only count if:
      • A run goes beyond the pivot line
      • Final action is inside the width of the box

Key 4‑3‑3 Attacking Patterns (Not scripted, principles-based)

    • Third-man run from #8 beyond CB
    • Winger underlap with FB overlap
    • False 9 pins → winger attacks channel

    Transition Focus (U19 standard)

    • Immediate counter-press by:
      • Ball-loser
      • Nearest #8
      • #6 closing centre

    Success looks like

    • Back three turn and run
    • Wing-backs unable to recover in time
    • Shots created from central or cut-back zones

Key Learning Outcomes (For U19 Players)

    • Understand how a 3‑4‑2‑1 protects central spaces
    • Recognise which opponent is responsible for them
    • Make decisions based on who steps out
    • Transfer positional play into vertical penetration

    Coach-Led Reflection Questions

    • “When the 10 stepped, who became free?”
    • “What told you to play over instead of through?”
    • “Which pass actually broke the box?”
