Description

The warm up for week 6 (Pass Move React) is a great activity to combine lots of ball work, movement and some additional physical returns.

To follow we have another game that focusses upon perception and knowing what is around you (Go Both Ways). The players decisions should relate to the situation they find themselves in and how well they can assess the positions of opponents and teammates.

Perception, awareness and quick decision making are the key features of (What is Going On?). It sounds confusing but this is a game worth persevering with at it really challenges the players and their ability to focus and is a great way to finish this weeks work.

Pass Move React

Organisation: Grids, areas or sections of the pitch can be used for this. 10x10m is a good place to start.

How to play:

The game shown is 3v2 but 3v1 can be used if your players need less pressure, and more thinking time. The “3” are trying to keep possession by passing and moving using the empty space around the area.

To add a progression, at any time, if the coach blows the whistle then ALL players must run to the cones (there are only 3) and if they get one, they become the passers for the next game.

To get players to react off each other one player can be designated to decide when to run to the cones (this should be after some possession play and ball work so this part is not neglected). Once this player goes for a cone then the others can react to try to touch a cone first to become or stay as a passer. Remember, there are only 3 cones so run and react FAST.

The video shows some possession play in the 3v2 then one of the designated players (it is a WHITE player in the video to help the motivation of the defenders but it could be a YELLOW or a WHITE player) triggers the sprint to the cones.

The 3 players who reach the cones first become the passers in the next game.

Option 1: The cones can be placed at different distances depending on what you are working on and this game is a great way to work on possession, defending and some physical returns as well.

Option 2: Play with balls of different sizes and weights.

Option 3: Have different ways to "trigger" the race for the cones (Whistle, player, first time successful pass, defenders intercepting a pass)

Organisation: The game is set up as shown but please adjust numbers and area size to fit the age and ability of your players. 30x20m is a good starting point.

How to play:

This is a counter attacking game.

  • It's a normal game until the first goal is scored
  • The team that scores the first goal can now attack EITHER goal for a set amount of time (2-3 mins) or the players can decide
  • In this first video you will see the YELLOW team score the first goal that opens up the possibility of attacking and scoring in both goals for the time decided.
  • In video 2 you will also see the game restart from the GK who has just conceded the first goal.

Go Both Ways (2)

Organisation: This video shows what might be possible after a team scores a goal. For a set amount of time the team that scored can attack either goal for a set amount of time (this could be 1 minute or 2 minutes or any other time you feel is appropriate) BUT....

They must cross the halfway line first.

In video 1 the YELLOW team scored a goal. This means that they can now attack and score in either goal but they must cross the halfway line with each attack as demonstrated in this video.

Organisation: This is another great way to get the young players playing in a game but in a game with a tactical challenge built in. The game can be played 3v3, 4v4, 5v5 or 6v6. The 4v4 version is shown in the diagram. Pitch is 40x20m.

There are no GK’s in this game so it is a good one to include your GK’s as outfield players. All players can block the goal without using their hands.

How to play:

There are three different games. The first two games are directional where teams score in any of the two designated goals on one the side of the pitch or by working the ball under control into the zones on each side of the pitch. (The shaded area in the diagram). Each team is given a goal and an end zone to attack and, to really challenge the players the end zone and the goals they must attack can be on different sides of the pitch. (As shown in the video)

The third game is a midfield possession game where the aim is to control possession and keep the ball until the coach changes the game again. This game is played in the middle unshaded area of the pitch.

The coach calls out which game is to be played (play for a set time or randomly change which game is being played) and will tell each team which goals and which end zones they must attack.

BUT.. After the midfield possession game the direction of the other two games changes and the teams attack the goals and the end zones their opponents were just attacking. Players will have to think quickly.

This game involves playing in different areas and into different goals/targets so will really make the players think, look around and develop their reactions and decision making. The video shows the YELLOW team in possession trying to score into the goals on one side or the end zones on the other side. The WHITE team are obviously doing the opposite.
