Overload in wide wide areas

Adaptations (Progressions & Regressions): Defending the overload.

10 minute practice- 1st block 4 minutes with a one minute break.

Half a pitch, one full size goal, 2 small size goals balls and 7 bibs.

For this practice we will be looking the attacking(Green) team to have the overload in the wide areas, this should look like a 2v1 in the wide areas. The ball will start from the half way line with the attacking team.I will want the attacking team to create crossing opportunities from wide creating problems for the defending team (reds). the pitch will be tapered going from the 18 yard box to encourage the ball being played out wide, in the area only 1 defender is allowed into this area and 2 attacker, creating the overload out wide. I will set the defending team up in a 4-2-0 they will be a player down so I create the overload. the attacking team will be in a 3-2-3. I will be looking for the reds to to engage the wide player and to send them down the line, the purpose of this is to make it so that it makes it obvious that the ball is going to be crossed and the rest of the team and set up ready for the cross. I will be looking for the reds to be defending the front post, middle of the goal and back post, with a midfielder covering the penalty spot incase of a cut back. There should be an overload at the back post as well so will look to see how the defending team deal with that. If the red team do have possession of the ball from the keeper or the regain the ball then I will want them to score in the two small goals on the half way line, there will be a limit of 10 seconds to score.  In this session I will put offside on but if it is tight then I will go in advance of the attacking team and one I might not be able to see it and run the lines and two you some times do not have theses decisions in a real game.

Challenges, Conditions or Targets: some of the challenges I want top see are when the ball is out wide, how the defending no 2/4 defend. I would want them to show down the line making the play predictable if in line with the 18 yard box, if higher then I would want them to shoe them inside to a more compact area. The problem I want are the attacking team to have a 2v1 on the wing and for crosses to come in. Then the defending team to be in a solid shape to defend and the GK to have a good starting position and organisation.

Overload in the middle

Adaptations (Progressions & Regressions): 2nd block

minutes with 1 minute break, using the same equipment as the 1st block, with the ball starting from the half way line but this time I want the attacking team to no have the over load in the middle of the pitch, creating a 4v5, the pitch is not tapered down the line of the 18 yard box to to the half way line. I want to encourage playing through the middle where the over load is, this means that the wide players can not come in and join. the ball can still be played out wide but this is now a 1v1. if the ball does go out wide on the one side then I will allow the other side to then come in and join the attacking and defending. the same applies in this block I want to see crosses and shots and for the the attacking to to utilise the overload. Same goes with the defending team if they have a chacne to score in the small goals I will encourage this as well. As for how the reds defend this time I will want them to now sit in a lower block and more disciplined and try and force the ball back or wide. The reds will set up in a 4-2 with a gk and the greens will set up in a 3-3-2. The same sending principals apply in the practice as well, looking to get the ball played wide, to cover and and if this was in a real game you would want to delay the play so that your team has time to recover.

Challenges, Conditions or Targets: The challenges I want to see are how the defending team cope with an overload in the middle of the field. I would want the attacking team to cause problems with 3rd man runs behind making the defending team make a decision if to track the runner or stay and keep their position. For the GK the starting position will be vital to no be dealing with more straighter balls and having to make a decision if you come and smother the ball or delay the attacking player and wait for defending players to cover. The communication with the GK and the defend will be more important now as they will need to work together to show the ball one way and around the goal.

SSG 1st block

Adaptations (Progressions & Regressions):

Now I will move into small sided games I will be looking at what we have done in the first two blocks and now make it more realistic to a game, instead of the two small goals I will now put in a full size goal on the half way line. I want the defending team now to try and score in the attackers goal instead of the small goal. The SSG with be done in 3 blocks of 4 minutes and 1 minute rest and any observations. To start with the ball will start from the attacking team but if the ball go behind for a goal kick then the defending team will be able to restart. In this tho I want the red team to have a high press. In this first block I will want the ball again to be played out wide crating a 2v1 out wide where now the ball must be crossed, seeing if the players have taken on board the information that would have been said in the specific practice. If the ball goes out wide then I will allow the attacking and defending wide players to come in and affect the play. What I want to see from the GK is good communication on the positioning of his defender, not being too close to the near post for the cross. This is now just a more realistic version of the specific practice, seeing how the team will defend and see if they have taken on board some of the things they have learn from the previous practice.

Challenges, Conditions or Targets

Again will be looking for the defending team to be in the right positions ready for the cross and to defend it properly, by clearing their lines or retaining the ball and scoring. With the defending team having a better idea on how I want them to defend I can now look and coach then Gk more in the session.

SSG 2nd block

Adaptations (Progressions & Regressions):

The 2nd block of SSG will now look at the overload in the middle of the pitch, again it will be 4 minutes and 1 minute rest. The defending team will be set up in a 4-1-2 while the attacking team will be a 4-2-2.  The ball starting from the attacking gk but if the ball goes out for a goal kick from the defending team then it will start from the gk. They will look to score in the opposite goal and the attacking team to press to regain the ball. The overload will be in the middle of the pitch so there will be space between the gaps in between the midfield and defenders. The over load in the middle of the pitch, creating a 4v3 once the first press in broken creating challenges which we would have touch on in the specific session. From a defending point of view I will want the two forward player to stop the ball being played out wide. so I will be looking for the defending team to keep compact and stop and through balls and make the play predictable. The ball is allowed to go out wide but it will be a 1v1 out wide so this will force the ball to be played back in the middle or an early cross.

Challenges, Conditions or Targets:

some of the challenges I want to see is if the ball breaks that first press how the defending looks to defend it, by showing the attacking team around and down the line or back. If the attacking team is not having much joy in breaking the lines then I will either drop a ball to create the over load. Again this will all depend on how this part of the session is following but I will want to have a more of input on the GK as now you are not only focusing on the ball being played behind and the defender but also you are more likely to see shots on goal.

SSG 3rd block

Adaptations (Progressions & Regressions): The 3rd block it will be the same timing and out comes along as I feel like I have achieved my objects in the first two blocks in not then I would go into habit more detail in this block and go over areas I feel I need to address. But if I feel I have met my objective then I will use this last block more for open play and let the game flow more taking out the taper line and letting players create their own overloads but if it start to look unorganised then I will put conditions on the game such as 2 two touch to keep the ball moving. This block I can focus more on the GK and give more detail in his positioning and the good that he does.

REFELTIVE LOG SHEET-

The flow of the session was good I did have a player go off injured for the red team so I changed one of the greens into a red. This didnt have a massive impact on the session I did slow it down bit more as the reds was defending big space and looked leggy after the first practice game. I stepped back more and when I saw that something was wrong like the defender not getting to the front post hole I would then ask why and I did this so the players could rest in position. once I got the answer I wanted I started the play where I stopped it.

wide areas

Adaptations (Progressions & Regressions):

1 full size goal

bag of balls

2 small sized goals

flat discs

half a pitch

3x4 minuets

1st block over load in the wide areas

2nd block over load in the middle

3rd cover any bases I didn't feel confident in.

Reds 5-2-1

Greens 2-3-1

The ball will start will the GK each time I will be looking for him to play it as if it was a goal kick each time. I want to achieve an over load out wide with a finish into the small sided goals. So I have added lines going from the 18 yard box to the half way line, once the ball is played out wide on the defending green player and are allowed into that corridor. With two attacking red players in there to create the overload. The ball can recycled out and played around the back or through to create a finish into the small goals. For the first session only the players in the these corridors can score, reinforcing the overload out wide. If the Green team do regain possession they can then attack the full size goal and look to have a shot on target. As this is a demoing session on the players out of possession it will not be multi ball so we will reset each time the ball is out of play.

From the Gk I will be looking at them supporting the play and communicating to make sure everyone is set ready for a counter attack. Although they will not being doing much in terms of making saves this is now a vital part of goalkeeping.

Challenges, Conditions or Targets:

through the middle

Adaptations (Progressions & Regressions):

2nd block

Reds 4-2-2

Greens 2-3-1

In the 2nd block I will be looking at attacking the overload through the middle with an end product of a finish into the small goal. Again I will be playing out from the back like a goal kick, this Time to create the over load in the middle I will want one of the wide players to join in so which ever side the ball is on the opposite wide player (Reds) will join in creating a over load in the middle. This time to score the ball must be be played by a player in the middle sector of the pitch. I will move the small goals closer to the middle of the pitch so I can achieve this. The same rules apple to the wide defending players they must stay in their corridor and can only affect play if the ball enters their area. With being in possession I want the see the Red team being patient in their build up play as they do have the overload in the middle, it is still a tight area so I will be looking at the right pace on the pass and players being comfortable under presser.

Again for the Gk it is about have good communication making sure he supports play and making sure his defenders are in the right positions.

SSG 1st block

Adaptations (Progressions & Regressions):

2 full size goals

half a pitch

balls

8v8 2 Gks

tapered lines

3x4 minuets with minuet break

SSG

Now we move into SSG we want it to be more realistic to a game scenario I have still left the tapered lines in as I want there to still be overloads in the wide and middle area, where only wide players are loud in there and who ever has possession of the ball can have an extra player enter and create an overload. This will be in the 1st game, in the 2nd game I will then say that a player out wide can enter the middle and create an over load in the middle. If at any time a goal is score by using the over load from either the wide area or through the middle then I will add an extra goal. But I do want to see what the players have learnt from the practice session and take it into the SSG, this will be leading in to a large area and a full size game. For the 3rd SSg I will have more of freedom in how the play letting the players be creative in how they achieve the overload and find a way of getting a chance to score.

GK

What I will be looking for now in the SSG is the positioning of the GK, how he moves around his goal, the communication he give if that is to get players into the right positions or to let players now where the next pass should be. But most of all it will be making sure that all times they are ready to protect the goal and use the right technique to make the save.

If I don't feel the SSG is using the overload as much as I wanted or it didn't look right I will take a player out and add a floater in so the team in possession will have an extra player. This player can not score but can be used as an extra man to create space and used for the overload.

REFELTIVE LOG SHEET-

A lot of the players was engaged in the session and did ask a lot of questions which was good but the ball rolling time was limited then because of this, next time I might answer a few which I thin k needed answering and when we had time at the of the practice answer then so it didn't eat into ball rolling time. I did notice that the GK struggle to clip a few balls so maybe I look at doing something in the next GK session for that.
