The Welsh Way Principles of play / Switching play:

  • Make the pitch big
  • Maintain width
  • Decision making when to switch
  • Who can switch?
  • Exploit the space
  • Ball speed

How it works:

  •  It’s a 7v7 game with the red team (coached) constantly attacking and trying to score in the large goal, focusing on the principles of switching play to create scoring opportunities.
  • Play will always start at half way line with reds in possession.
  • The blue team, after winning possession of the ball, aims to counterattack and score in one of the two mini goals.
  • During transitions, both teams will be guided according to the respective principles for in-possession and out-of-possession phases to maintain realism throughout the practice.

Coaching content (Red coached team):

  • Play quickly / Ball speed
  • Play around opposition
  • Timings of runs
  • Positions - around & away from the ball
  • Outcomes in the final third

Coaching interventions:

  • Walk through (quickly, quiet simple)
  • Concurrent
  • Terminal
  • Coaching process
Challenges, Conditions, Targets:
  • Challenge: Move the ball quickly to switch sides rapidly, preventing the opposing team from keeping up, so we can take advantage of the switch of play and create a scoring opportunity.
  • Conditions all Blocks: If a goal is scored following a successful switch of play, it will be rewarded with 2 points. Blue team after winning possession needs to score within 10 seconds. Condition Block 1: To keep the ball moving quickly, a maximum of 3 touches is allowed in the first block.
  • Target: Reds = Score in the big goal. Preferably after a switch of play. Blues = defend the regular goal and trying to score in the mini-goals after winning possession.
