Description

When defending from the front we want to deny central progression by the oppositon and force them into wider areas in order to comply with pressing strategy 2 (forcing play into more adventgeous areas). Follow up session to this would be focused on pressing within the wide areas. Primary component of this session is denying the forward progress against a back 4 and dble pivot or single pivot.

Outlining the Opportunity (5 mins)

Main Moment: BPO

Key Principal: Force ball into outside zones

Defining Proplem /Opportunity: This is an opportunity and will be used to educate the players how the attacking players, midfielders and wingbacks interact within this formation in order to force the ball wide and then press the fullback where able

Purpose of the Press: Force ball into more favourable areas to win back within

What - Denying the oppositon centrebacks easy access into the central areas and instead seeking to force the ball into either of the fullbacks in order to press

Who - CF, Wingers, Wingbacks and CDM

Where - Attacking third

When - Opposition have secured possession withtheir fullbacks and /or goalkeeper and are looking to build possession through the central part of the pitch

What - New action for team - no specific problems have presented as of yet

Session has been planned for 16 players including 2 GK (who would be involved)

Passing Practice (10 mins)

Explanation: Passing practice which starts to introduce the pressing reaction to a pass but which also works upon introducing combination play and moving the ball quickly within 1 or 2 touch

Version One

- ball starts at North and South

- Receiving player starts behind the pole

- Inside player moves to the left and receives pass on their back foot

- Plays to the player waiting to their right

- Both players following their pass with a 75% sprint (build up intensity as session progresses)

Progression

- Players switch side to work other way

Version Two

- As above however this time rather than the receiving player dribbling around the pole they play a one two with the passing player before passing to the waiting player to their right.

Progression

- work both sides once again

Coaching Points

- Encouragement based rather than picking specific points

- Encourage actions to be performed sharply

- Technical detail to focus on which foot to receive on /play too depending on which version we are doing? Question the players around why

Positioning Game (20 mins)

Explanation:

- White look to maintain possession within a 9 v 5 overload and progress the ball to each end and back - minimum of 3 blues allowed inside the central area

- White only score a point however if they play into the middle grid (shaded) and beyond the white line before playing to another player (see pass lines above). If the Blue team connect end to end through the shaded area without going wide then they get 3 points.

- Red look to mainain control of the central area and press outside of the central area when the opportunity arises too

- Red team are the coached team. The white have complete automony to come up with different passing combinations /strategies to score from

Red team must always be within a 221 formation

Pressing Triggers
The pressing triggers which I like to use are:

- Bad pass and /or touch

- Isolated player

- Player with back to play and no scanning

- Slow pass which presents opportunity to win back high

Coaching Points

Player Task (Coaching Cue's)

Shape - Red should always be organised within a 2:2:1

- Can the top red position themselves to not only block passing lanes centrally, but also be aware of their covershadow to make sure that they can positions to be able to limit access into other central players (when the ball is an end player take a position which puts the deeper central blue within your covershadow)

- Can the middle red lines be close enough to deter a pass into central areas, but be able to press into the wide areas should the opportunity arise (position on the outside shoulder of the ballside blue CM if the top red player has blocked passing lane - other second line red should be in a slightly deeper inside position too to provide cover - pressure, cover, balance concept)

- Can the deepest red players be in a position to deny a pass out or through should the first line be beat (when a central white player receives the ball beyond the first two lines be in a position which will allow you to put immediate pressure on that player to deny forward progression)

- If one of the wide blue players becomes isolated can the red team work together and press collectivley (as the outside player receives the ball can the closest middle red player press the ball and try and arrive at the same time as the ball, deepest ballside red block the passing lane, top red player blocks route back and the other two non ballside reds come across to support the side press and stop balls into the middle area) question for players - how will we know when can we press?

Point to Note - If the GK are joining in this part of the session then we would dispense with the mini goals and instead use full size goals set back from the pitch which the red team can attack upon turnover.

Game Training (30 mins)

Explanation:

- 7 v 7 game where we are working on issues - one denying central progression and second is starting to lay the foundation for the press of the fullback*

- whites look to build posession to be able to score in any of the four mini goals

- If the whites can play into the middle and combine to score within either of the two central positioned goals then = 3 points. The outside goals are worth 1 each

- No restrictions on positions - normal game rules apply

- Reds are looking to deny central progression and force into wide areas in order to win back. If they can win back within the red squares and score then it is worth 3 points. All other turnovers must result within a goal inside 8 seconds or the game restarts

Coaching Points - Denying Central Progression

Player Task (Coaching Que)

#9

- Can you block the ball into the white CDM and should the CB carry the ball forward force the play to one side to the FB (when white passes LOE then angle approach to them to make sure they favour playing one side or another - if shifted to other CB then resume use cover shadow to block ball to CDM)

#7 & #10

- Can you take your position off of the #9 and not allow the CDM to receive and play forward but if ballside also be ready to press the FB where appropriate (If #9 covershadow allows then take position on outside shoulder of the CDM)

- [ball played to FB] can you press onto the FB but stop the pass coming back inside to the white CDM (Angle approach run to deny ball back inside to CDM - look to arrive as close to the same time as the ball - if you cannot get there at some time then vary approach so as not played around)

#11 and #2

- Can you postion yourself to both deter the longer pass into the winger (mini goal) but be close enough to put pressure on the FB should they have a bad touch or there is a misplaced pass by the CB

#8 and #6

- can we be close enough to either deter, or if played still, win any pass from CB into the #10 (take a position either side of the #10 for white but ballside red CDM slightly more advanced to allow support to the next line)

- If CDM manage to receive in a position to play forward where appropriate can you apply immediate pressure to stop forward progressing

Question the players - when do we effect the press - can we always do this? How do we trigger the press?

* Fullback Press (brief coaching points - remember this is not a pressing session so more instructive and we can come back to this in a later session)

Once the ball goes to the fullback then the press kicks in - will work with the players on this after we have let it run through a couple of times to co-ordinate

- 7 or 10 press the fullback using covershadow to block inside pass - non pressing player comes inside and splits the half of the pitch

- 9 blocks passing lane inside but is in postion to arrive at the same as the ball on the centre back if played back

- ballside 8 or 6 push up higher to be able to effect the CDM should they receive but also block passing lane into the white 10 - non ballside comes acorss inside

- 11 or 2 block passing lane to winger - non ballside drop deeper and tucks inside

- CB (if involved) re-adjust to become a L/RB and 2 CB depending on which side the ball is on

Training Game (15 mins)

Explanation

Teams set up in a 11 v 11 using both the formations we use 3421 and 4222 (ask players before to show how the pressing worked on carries over to the 4222)

if short on players then remove the wingbacks and the fullbacks and play the width of the 18yd box - slightly narrowing off the central box to create a channel in wide areas

Central area marked out on the pitch broadly covering the central section of the middle third and top of the defensive third. Should either team manage to play through this area and score then any goal is with triple

Rules

- no throw ons in your own half, instead play restarts within 5 sec from the GK - ball must be distributed within that time frame otherwise coach feeds a ball in from half way to the oppositon this is done so that the defending team have to work quickly to get back within their BPO positions

- if defending team force ball into the fullback and press aggressivley and put the ball out of play themselves then they win the throw - this is to reward the pressing effort required

This session includes animated drill(s) Save Image: Football/Soccer Session Plan Drill (Colour): Shooting Session Create Video:

Shooting Session (10 mins)

EXplanation:

2 part shooting practice - loosely mimicking the retrival of the ball from either wide or central

Part 1 (replicates combination between the front 3)

- Player B shows for the ball from player A

- Player A passes

- Player B dummies to let it run through for Player C

- Player C plays first time around the corner for player B to finish

Part 2 (repliacates combination between attacker and midfielder who won the ball)

- After Player B has had their shot player C pulls off the mannequin to receive

- Player D passes into Player C who controls takes a touch and finishes

Rotation

Player A & D become B & C. The latter go through SAQ circuit and join back of the line on the other side

Progression

Could add passive defenders into the excercise to challenge the strikers
