Arrival Activity - Handball (15 mins)

10 minutes

Split the group into 2 teams of 6. They have to move around the area trying to keep the ball. They cannot move with the ball in their hands. This should force them to move off the ball and try to create good passing angles in order to receive the ball. Each time the team in possession of the ball gets 5 passes they score 1 point. See how many passes each team can get.

Technical aspects:

> Create angles to receive the ball with space and time

> Checking your shoulder for receiving the ball

3 vs 1 (15 mins)

10-15 minutes

Now put the players into teams of 4's. Set up an area of 8x8. There will be 3 players trying to keep the ball and 1 defender, who will have a bib in their hand. If the defender intercepts the ball or a player passes the ball out of the 8x8 area then they are given the bib and become the defender. Go around to each group and now is where you give bits of technical detail to the players and show them real-life examples of them. See if they can apply what has been said to them in this practise.

Technical aspects:

> Create angles to receive the ball with space and time

> Checking your shoulder for receiving the ball

> Take your touch away from the defender, on the back foot in space to keep possession

> Protect the ball, putting body between the ball and the defender

Tactical aspects:

< In possession - creating angles, movement off the ball to create space to receive in

< Out of possession - cut off passing lines, apply pressure to hurry player with the ball

*Applying conditions - players in possession are only allowed 3 touches of the ball, or have to pass the ball within 3 seconds of receiving it

Maintain the ball - SSG (15 mins)

15 minutes

Now progress the practise into a 4 vs 1/2. Split the pitch into 3 areas. In the opposite 2 areas the teams have to keep possession of the ball for 10 passes. Once they have kept the ball for 10 passes they have to switch the ball into the opposite area. If they fail to successfully switch the ball then their team has to come into the middle area and become the defending team. If the 2 defenders manage to intercept the ball then their team comes out of the middle area and the team who lost the ball now goes into the middle.

Progression:

Make the zones smaller

Include more defenders (4 vs 3)

Increase the target to 15/20 passes

Apply conditions: limit on touches, 3 seconds on the ball etc

PROGRESSION:

Now if the other receiving team are showing an angle you don't have to wait to make 10 passes before switching the ball, if this is done quickly and properly the defenders should never get near the ball.

End of Session Game

15-20 minutes

Split group into teams, 1 team bibed up and the other non-bibs. Apply a condition that if a team can keep the ball for 5 passes they score a goal as well as the normal scoring system when the ball goes into the net.

See if the lads can now apply all the technical information into a full-sized area. Things to look out for:

> good runs of the ball to create space to receive the ball in

> creating angles to receive the ball

> taking touches/controlling the ball away from the defenders

> receiving ball on the back foot

> checking the shoulder before receiving the ball
