Skill Introduction (15 mins)

Set Up:

  • Players: 10-12
  • One big goal at one end with a GK and two small goal at the other end
  • Cones placed 4-5m apart

Explanation:

    • The ball starts with Player C, who passes into Player A. As the pass is being played, Player B moves of the designated cone to put pressure on the ball.

    • Player C must take a touch before passing the ball. This acts as a trigger for Player A to move off their cone in preparation to receive the ball.

    • The aim is for Player A to adopt a body position that allows them to shield the ball from the advancing defender. • Once in this shielding position, can Player A find a way to turn past the defending Player B and score

    • If Player B wins the ball, they should look to score in the mini-goals at the opposite corner of the playing area.

    • Rotate player positions after each repetition.

Coaching Points:

  • Can you scan before you receive the ball
  • Can you shield the ball from your defender (Use your arms to feel the pressure)
  • Can you turn your defender with your first touch

Skill Training (15 mins)

Set Up:

  • Players: 10-12
  • Grid Size: 20m x 20m

Explanation:

  • This is a practice designed to develop a player’s ability to operate when feeling pressure from behind.
  • Player A plays a ball diagonally across the playing area, between and past the red cones. Both Player A and Player B should then race to the ball.
  • The first player to secure the ball aims to pin and spin the opposition player before getting a shot off on goal.
  • The aim is for the non-passing player – here, Player B – to receive the ball. The diagonal pass shortens the distance for Player B to run and improves their chance of securing the ball.
  • Once Player B arrives at the ball, the aim is to spin/ turn/move past the defender and create a shooting opportunity.
  • Players should reverse roles after each repetition.

Coaching Points:

  • Can you scan before you receive the ball
  • Can you shield the ball from your defender (Use your arms to feel the pressure)
  • Can you turn your defender with your first touch
