Passing Practice (20 mins)

Setup/Explanation:

- 8 players. Setup two areas if numbers are high to ensure appropriate repetition.

- 6 cones, x2 Mannequins/Poles, x2 sets of bibs, multiple footballs.

- Play begins with both A players, they play a diagonal pass into player B, whilst this pass is being played player C is allowed to move any where within a five metre radius of their cone, it is important that as the pass is on its way to player B that they are scanning to check where player C is, so that they can take their first touch accordingly. Once player B has passed the ball to C, player C dribbles the ball back to their queue and all players move up one spot.

- Player C may only make one movement.

Progressions/Variations:

- Place players in groups of three and have one in the middle and two on either end. Players passes up and back via the middle player. Both players on the ends move along their line once they have made a pass so that the middle player must scan to take a good first touch when they are passing back up to them.

- If players are not looking properly and just twisting their heads have player C stand still but hold up cones that player B must shout the colour of before receiving from player A.

Coaching Points/Behaviour Influencing:

- Player B's Direction of first touch is aligned to where C is situated. Ie do I take my touch on the back foot beyond the mannequin or do I take it in front of the mannequin to go inside?

- Match like movement off the mannequin from player B.

Positioning Game (20 mins)

Setup/Explanation:

- Up to 12 players. Setup in central area around penalty box.

- 4 cones, x2 poles, x2 sets of bibs, Multiple balls.

- Play always starts with yellow 3 or 4 passing the ball in. Yellow 3 and 4 must play on their line but can drop off as far they like in BP. 10 plays along the line as pictured but can move higher/further away from play. 8 and 6 play in the two central zones freely. 2 and 5 play along the sides and can go as far wide as they wish. White players play in the central areas, 2 per area.

- Yellows aim to get the ball to their number 10, meanwhile the whites aim to gain possession of the ball. If whites win the ball they can play 4 v 2 against the yellow 6/8 in both of the central areas.

- Rotate white team players to ensure embedded learning for all.

Progressions/Variations:

- The 6 or 8 must receive the ball before it goes to the 10.

- Whites can tackle the players on the outside of the area.

- When whites are in possession the yellow 10 can move in to central areas to create a 4v3.

Coaching Points:

- Positioning in relation to where the ball. Use width, depth and length to stretch the opposition.

- Body positioning when receiving. Is the space to exploit or do I need to protect the ball?

- Patient build up. If there is no free player in space, circulate the ball to disorganise the defending team.

- Awareness of where teammates are. Constantly scanning and taking pictures of your surroundings to execute quickly and under pressure.

Team Task: When we have the ball can use width depth and length in our positioning to stay on the ball?

- x2 sets of bibs, x1 goal, x3 mini goals, cones, multiple balls.

- Play always starts from a short GK to the yellow team. Players set up as to coach's desire. Divide field into two as pictured. Defending team (white) can go anywhere on the field they wish. Yellow team are locked into their side of the field as pictured except the number 10 who is free to go in any side. Whites must stay out of 18 yard area when the GK is being taken.

- Yellows aim to combine and run the ball over the half way line. Whites aim to win the ball and score in the big goal ASAP.

Progressions/Variations:

- If numbers are low, create a finishing zone for the yellow team to avoid them kicking it straight over the white team without match like resistance.

- The GK can start with the ball in their hands.

- Allow attackers to follow their own pass into the other half of the field.

- Add more defenders to the white team.

- Awareness of where teammates are. Scanning every time the ball moves and taking pictures of your surroundings to execute quickly and under pressure.
