A session focusing on the aspects of diving. A 3-phase session overall that has the following components:
- Technical diving routine
- Skill-based diving work (Phase 2)
- GK face-off (competition-based)
The first two components aim at readying and conditioning the GKs respectively and then allow them to compete against each other where decision-making and form can be tested at the end.

DIVING - PHASE 2:
Objectives:
- The aim here is to allow the GK to apply the diving mechanisms and movements done in the previous block, when responding to shots of different types coming at him/her.
Description:
- The GK will be in the set position and ready in the goal, this time protecting the space between two poles positioned a little out of the goalposts, serving as the actual goal.
- The server will be positioned just around the penalty spot who will serve the delivery across all heights, ranges and paces. It can be a grounded roll, a kick off the floor, a half-volley, or even a regular, dipping throw at one of the top corners.
- The active GK can work for 4-5 deliveries per working set and then rest, allowing the other GK to come in and do the same.
At all times the coach is looking for the set position and handling technique. Also looking for the GK to adjust their position along the line and towards the ball.

See the guidance at the top of this page to understand why you are not seeing interactive Football/Soccer images.
- If a GK wants to keep the ball down and shoot, he can but then the other GK is allowed to charge and close down in a 1v1 situation if he wants to.
- Coach to keep a score and determine winner.
Keep observing set position looking for in line and down the line of the service points.

Drill structure :
1.Gk moves into front post and server stands in the cutback position and gives the gk and diving save too make.
2. He then quickly gets up and gets ready to deal with the next ball that the server is throwing into the ground towards the far post so it bounces up and the gk can make a diving save.
Adaptations (Progressions & Regressions):
Higher/lower reps
Alternate sides
Different types of serves - off the floor
Different types of dive techniques- low mid high dives
Server comes closer and rolls the ball in
Challenges, Conditions or Targets:
Clean hands catch challange
Clean sheet challange

Adaptations (Progressions & Regressions):
Increase speed of the drill for GK of greater ability.
Put emphasis on technique delivery at a slower pace for lesser abilities.
Repetition is the key.
Challenges, Conditions or Targets:
Challenge the amount of clean catches

GK Diving Routine (10 mins)
DIVING ROUTINE:
Objectives: To get the GK started off with the fundamental movement mechanisms of being set in the ready position, feet shoulder width apart, on toes, hands ready at waist height, shoulders forward, head steady and eyes on the ball. This should be demonstrated before diving activity starts. This session will get the body accustomed to the workloads.
Description:
- GK would be in the set position on the centre-cone with the two other cones placed at an equi-distance measuring the GK's height/frame lying on the floor (reach).
- The other GK will roll the ball a couple of yards inside from the far red-cone on one side and the working GK to go down, dive forwards, securing the oncoming rolling ball.
- The serving GK can then start increasing the distance gradually as the working GK sets in comfortable in the session, rolling the ball further towards the end red cones.
- Each GK to work for 7 dives on each side across 2 working sets.
Duration: 10 mins; 5 mins. each GK with 20 seconds hydration break in between.
Coaching cues:
- GK to go a foot's length forward off the leg's side where the ball is arriving, stepping forwards as you dive to secure the ball.
- GK to keep the stepping leg bent slightly and push off the leg to generate spring power as the dive gets closer to the floor.
- Catching technique to focus with heads, hands in the direction of the ball and "W" catching technique when securing the ball.
- Look to dive forwards - attack the ball.
- If the ball is fully on the floor flat, then the "W" technique remains all the same but with one hand on top of the ball and the other behind the ball. Coach to emphasize big hand behind the ball and big hand on top to trap the ball.
