Aim
This drill focuses on players using pace and technique to sucessfully defend the goal and prevent the other team scoring a goal. This can be adapted per number of players and increasing pitch area. The focus should be on pace to reach ball and score as quickly as possible or to defend 1v1 to force play or play ball over their goal lines first. This encourages fast thinking, speed and technical ability.
Organisation
10 players to be split into 2 groups and line up either side of the goals, 1 team defending and other attacking. Use 2 cones to create a channel to run up and around to ball in central position. First team to score 5 goals wins. Defenders have to either force attackers over their goal line or tackle and pass ball over goal lines to score for their team.
Area size
Pitch size 35 yards by 25 yards with goal. Can be adapted based on number of players taking part.
Session
One team to be defenders, one team to be attackers with defenders having the chance to score goals from this play. Have one player from either side run up and around the cones to the goal line where there are 2 balls, first player to reach it has a attempt at the goal, defender can make a steal by tackling or forcing play over their goal line
Adaptations (progressions and regressions)
To make a progression, allow a goal keeper as a second defender to help keep ball away by passing to the goal keeper. Can also increase space to make it wider space to defend. This can also work as regression by starting ball closer to the goal. Can also make pitch size smaller to make defenders play tightly and add more players in from either side if needed.
Challenges, conditions and targets
The players must force play their way and either prevent goals being scored or make shots on targets for their team. First team to 5 goals win. Defenders become attackers and attackers become defenders. The drill isnt over untill one team has completed required number of goals. Focus on 1v1 and 1v2 defending.
Outcome
All players are confident in being able to defend and forcing the play to their advantage. They understand the importance of keeping their positions and being patient. They will also demonstrate mechanics while defending and understand why they need to keep their defending area clear from attacking players.
