Neuro Warm Up (Opening Up)10 mins

Organization

  • Players will start on the starting cone on either side and will wait for the coach to call a colour (blue or red)
  • When the coach calls the colour, the player will run to the dome cone and then to the colour that was called as if they are opening up to the ball
  • As soon as they reached the first colour, they will then sprint to the end of the line

Variation

  • Include the ball to receive and release
Coaching Points
  • Body orientation - when running to the colour, players should try to have their bodies orientate where they can see the dome cone and the colour cone. this will simulate dispersal movement in a game
  • Scans in between - players are encouraged to scan in between when running to the colour. this will simulate scanning while dispersing

Passing Sequence10 mins

Organization

  • 2 balls will be going at the same time on opposite corners
  • The play will start to the direction of the long side with a bounce pass from the player on flat marker
  • After the bounce the player will then play the player long on the other side
  • Lastly, the player that received from the long pass, will play across on the short side
  • Players will rotate one spot ahead of them

Coaching Points

  • Touch with purpose - every touch should have a purpose to it - is the touch to set up myself for the next pass or am I touching the ball for the fun of it?
    • Lean to the direction the player wants to go on the touch in order to have more success, the ball should be out of feet so that the player can pass the ball more naturally with more fluidity
      • Off-ball movement - every movement should try to offset the defender to create space or setup for oneself
        • Double-movements to create the extra time and space for the touch or pass, meeting the ball instead of waiting for the ball to come,

Rondo 2v2+2 Switch20 mins

Organization

- Players will be paired up with a partner (4 different teams with one team of 2 as neutrals)

- The playing area will be split into three with two possession boxes, and one switch-over zone

 - Every zone has to be occupied by one pair

- The goal of the game is to combine 4 passes and play it to the switch-over zone to switch the play

- After the switch-over zone players switch the ball, they now join inside the grid and try to combine 5 passes, while the pair that passed it into the switch-over zone are now in the switch-over zone

Coaching Points

  • Bounce passes to create gaps to exploit
    • Even if there is a man on back, players are encouraged to use the bounce pass to exploit the gap in behind left by the defender via the third man
  • Third man play
    • Players are encouraged to identify which spaces are open in the playing area and to exploit them third man (e.g. space in behind defender,  third man goes to the space and a 2 player combination pass into that third man)
  • Off-ball movement to create space for teammate
    • Rotations whenever being marked, or movement that encourages defenders to stack a certain area - leaving teammate(s) unmarked

Possession Breakout Game20 mins

Organization

  • Players are divided into grids - 3v2 and 2v2
  • Players are to stay in their grid until they've reached 3 passes and have passed it to the target man
  • The activity will start in the 3v2 grid with the attacking team looking to score by either making 10 passes for 1 point OR playing 3 passes and breaking out to the other grid to score on the opposition net for 2 points
  • The defending team can try to steal the ball and score for 1 point
Coaching Points
  • If the attacking team cannot attack after 3rd pass, they are encouraged to keep the ball and wait for opportunity to attack - remember they can gain a point with 10 passes
  • Be patient with the ball, look to draw the defenders in and attack from the space they left behind
Strategies to Score
  • Lure defenders on one side with short passing combinations and bounce passes and then attacking the other side with more numbers
  • 'Bait' the defenders in by changing the tempo of execution
  • Using in-direct ways to get to the player or space - third man run, third man combination (just like the tech. combinations before)
