3 zone games (20 mins)
3 Zone game to practice playing through the thirds.Set up is pitch split into thirds with 2 defenders 2 midfield plus i magic man ( floater), and 1 striker. Players have to start in zones but attacking team can move 1 player from defence into midfield zone as attack moves up pitch to create overload in midfield, then if moves penetrates final third 2 midfield players can move into the attacking zone to create overload in final third. GK starts move off passing into 1 of the 2 defenders , defender tries to play ball into middle zone ( running or passing) and then into final third. Various conditions can be applied , create a set time for the attack to be completed, 3 touches only , Forward must set back before shooting etc. When team looses ball players must recover to zones initially started in.
Outcomes
Attacking
Technical/Tactical - As soon as GK receives ball defenders split to create space , open body to receive ball, decision pass or run with ball, Midfield need to make zone as big as possible using full width both sides and central Mid occupying central areas, Forward to be available as Target to receive ball. Try to use overload by dragging defenders in, attack should be quick and dynamic.
Physical - Try to use change of speeds, strength in protecting ball, sharp movements to create space.
Winning Attitude - Communicate to ensure players know your available, encourage, keep positive!!
Defending
Technical/Tactical - When outnumbered in attacking zone 1 v 2 try to force play outside to isolate attack to one side of the pitch, in middle zone 2 v 3 again outnumbered both defenders must work together, try to slow attack by blocking forward passes leave furthest attacker free, press at good opportunities ( heavy touch ) or interceptions on poor passes. Defenders in defending zone will be initially 2 v 1 so nearest defender can apply high pressure on forward other defender offers cover, as midfield players arrive to change defense to outnumbered try to force attack wide to prevent switch of play.
Physical - strength in challenge, press with speed, stay balanced.
Winning Attitude - encourage others , focus , concentrate, stay positive.
