Passing combination warm up (10 mins)

Time: 10 mins 

Method:

Players positioned around the circle with two players inside the circle looking to play combination play.

Two players have football on the outside, 1st player starts the play with pass into the middle, players in the middle play one/two passes and are looking to play the ball back to a different player on the outside.

Once combination play is completed inside players are looking to receive 2nd ball  to play another combination.

Repeat the sequence twice and then rotate the players on the inside.

Possession practice (15 mins)

Time: 10mins 

Method:

Set up the area as seen above in the image, with 2 Goalkeepers, one at the halfway line and the other on the edge of the box.

In the area, players play 7v7 with 2 extra players. This creates a 11v7 possession practice when in possession of the ball.

The aim of the practice is to complete 6 passes. When this happens, the team in possession gets 1 point.

If the ball goes out of the area, it starts with the coach once again.


Coaching Points:

  • DON'T GET TRAPPED: When in possession of the ball, players need to use quick combinations with quality passes to escape pressure from the opposition, whilst also looking to find the spare player.
  • SWITCH THE PLAY: The team in possession needs to maintain good width and length to stretch out the opposition. However, when under pressure, the attacking team must look to switch the play with long passes or quick combinations through the defensive team.
  • MAINTAIN TEMPO: To move the opposition, players should be encouraged to pass quickly, taking 1-2 touches to maintain tempo to change the picture (move the opposition) to find space and free players.

4 GOAL GAME (15 mins)

Time: 10 mins

Method:

7v7+4 (2 neutrals inside the area plus 2GK's on each end line acting as a wall players, play with the team in possession)

Teams play directionally and can score on one of two small goals on either side.

Neutrals players are restricted to two touches only.

Coaching points:

  • DON'T GET TRAPPED:
  • When in possession of the ball, players need to use quick combinations with quality passes to escape pressure from the opposition, whilst also looking to find the spare player.

    9v9 with isolated wingers (30 mins)

    Time 20mins with isolated wingers plus 10 mins with no restrictions.

    Method:

    Set up the area as seen above with the players in position with the numbers referencing their positions.

    In the wide areas, 2 players from both teams are locked in the wide channels.

    When in the attack, 1 attacker can go into the wide-area creating a 2v1 situation when building from the back.

    Each team has 5 repetitions of the practice, with the Goalkeeper starting with a goal kick. The practice restarts if a goal is scored or the ball goes out of play.


    Coaching Points:

    • CREATING SPACE AND MOBILITY: Players need to use the space by providing length, width and, depth to the team with good body shape to play forward as when appropriate. Players need to use mobility with rotations and interchanges to occupy space that allows us to find free players (e.g. Centre Midfielder going into the Full Back position).
    • PASSING AND SUPPORT: Players need to move to create supporting lines, depending on the ball and teammate positions, maintaining triangles and diamonds to play. Also, players need to look to pass with quality and accuracy
    • .PENATRATION: At the right time, players need to penetrate with passes, dribbles or running with the ball to pass the defenders to create an attacking opportunity
    • MANAGE THE OPPOSITIO: Manage the opposition to press, cover and balance to prevent the attackers from playing forward to keep the practice realistic.
