Attacking Overloads 1 (20 mins)
Drill 1 - Attacking Overloads in SSG
Duration - 20 minutes
Area Needed - Width of 18 yard box, length = 40 yards
Objective - To improve our decision making in overloaded attacking scenarios
Method:
- Defending team (Blue) start behind their goal
- Attacking team (Red) start behind their goal
- Attacking team GK starts attacks by playing ball to attackers when they enter playing grid
- Defending team players enter playing grid at same time as attackers
- GKs start in playing grid
Orientation:
- Defending team made up of key players - GK, CBs, FBs, CDMS
- Attacking team made up of key players - GK, CF, Wingers, CMs, FBs
- Attacking team starts each attack with one player more than defending team - Coach varies through drill
Coaching Points:
- Attackers to play as wide as possible
- Move ball quickly
- Vary attacking runs
- Use overload to change point of attack when needed
Progressions:
- Attacking team must work ball into box before shooting
- Introduce shot clock to encourage higher tempo attacks

Progressive Overloads (20 mins)
Drill 2 - Progressive overloads with transitions to attack/defend
Duration - 20 minutes
Area Needed - Width = 5m wider than width of18 yard box, Length = 40 yards
Objective - To improve our decision making in overloaded attacking scenarios and in transitions
Method:
- Red player attacks GK in 1 v 1 scenario
- When 1st attack finishes, Red player transitions to defence, 2 Blue players enter grid as attackers, creating a 2v1 attacking overload
- Once a player enters the grid, they stay in the grid until the drill finishes
- More players enter grid as attackers each time previous phase finishes - final phase will see an 8v7 attacking overload
- Players transition from attack to defence or defence to attack each time a new phase begins
- When defending team win possession inside a phase, transition to attack and score into mini goals
- 5 x 3min 30sec rounds, 30sec rest between rounds
Orientation:
- Rotate GK every 3 phases to maintain intensity (lots of shots)
- Use 18 yard line as on offside marker to ensure players get back onside when transitioning from defence to attack
Coaching Points:
- Attackers to play as wide as possible - move ball quickly
- Vary attacking runs
- Use overload to change the point of attack
Progressions:
- Introduce shot clock to encourage higher tempo attacks
- Keep score to make drill even more competitive

Game - 8 v 8 with overload grids (15 mins)
Game - 8 v 8 with overload grids
Duration - 15 minutes
Area Needed - Width of 18 yard box, length = half the pitch
Objective - To improve our decision making in overloaded attacking scenarios
Method:
- 1-2-3-2 vs 1-2-3-2
- Divide pitch into unit 3 grids - Defensive/Midfield/Attacking
- Only player playing the pass into the next grid can join that grid in order to create an attacking overload
Orientation:
- Key players in key grids - GKs and DEF, Midfielders, Attackers
- Defending team's players must stay in their grids (don't track attacking passer creating overloads)
Coaching Points:
- Use width and depth to create space for overloading player entering grid
- Midfield unit rotate and make opposite runs to create space to receive
- Use bounce passes to create overloads
- Use overload to change point of attack when needed
Progressions:
- Allow defending team to make delayed recovery runs to pressure attacking overloads
Cool Down - 10 minutes
Session Review - 4 minutes
- Did we use width and depth to create space for overloads?
- Did we vary our attacking runs to create options for penetrative passing?
- Did we use the extra player to change the point of attack when needed?
- Are we more confident in creating goal scoring opportunities from overloads in the attacking phase?
