Set Up
2 x teams. Make sure one team is overloaded to create the scenrio of having an outnumbered situation in the middle of the pitch, i.e 4-4-2 vs 4-5-1. Challenge to team with an extra player: Can you double up on support from the overload and keep the ball moving (playing off the ball) combining and playing progressive football through the thirds? Quick, desicive combination play. Challenge to team with one less player: Can you look to bypass the areas of overload, for example the central area, and find CF who can link up with suppor runners (3rd man runs)?
Progressions
Bring in offside lines right away. One touch finish for overload team. Whole-part-whole session. Part = patterns of play in a circuit fashion with patterns for each team, some instructed and some improvised by players, work on it, revise, review and give player feedback throughout. Focusing on roles and responsibilities of CF, inside forward, CM and overlapping FB
Key Points
Overload team: Play off the ball, keep the ball moving (less travelling with ball, more pass and move), be progressive with the combination play, double up on support using overload advantage to stretch opposition. Under-loaded team: Use CF to link up play, play quickly to CF and work off of him, timing of support runs in front and from behind, be positive and desicive.
