Defending a 3v2 overload (25 mins)

Defending a 3v2 Overload

Setup:

This is set-up for 11+ players.

Area - approx 40x30 yds

Blue Team are defenders for the whole practice

Red Team are attackers for the whole practice

Conditions:

  • GK starts game by playing a pass into one of the 3 RED attackers.
  • This is the trigger for the REDs to form an attack and for the BLUEs to react and start defending the 3v2 overload.
  • Aim is to stop the 3 attackers scoring, or even better - stop a shot on goal
  • Once game breaks down, next group get ready and GK restarts game.

Targets:

  • If REDs get an attempt on goal they receive 1 point
  • If REDs score they get 2 points.
  • If BLUEs stop an attack either with tackle, an interception or force a mistake meaning balls leave playing area -  the BLUE team gets 1 point
  • If BLUEs win the ball and can score into either of the two mini goals the BLUE team gets 5 points

Coaching Points:

- Closest defender closes down RED with ball quickly then slow down

- Delaying the attacker - Don't dive in. If opportunity arises - then WIN it!

- Correct body position - (side on, bent knees, balanced, on toes)

- Forcing attacker away from goal

- Work as a pair (communication) to cut off as many angles of attack as possible

- If REDs manage to switch play, BLUEs need to shuffle across and start defending process again

Challenges:

 - Can the defending team keep the REDs out for 7 seconds.

 - Individual challenge for GK - if a shot caught - can you score in one of thetwo mini goals from your own area with a throw or kick.

Progressions :

- Make 4v2 or 2v1 to make it harder for defenders.

Regressions:

-If BLUEs keep REDS out for 5 seconds, every further second is a point

SSG (25 mins)

SSG:

Size appropriate pitch.(35x40yds?)

Reds managed

BLUEs coached

6 v 5. REDs have the extra outfield player.

Conditions

Goals can be scored by both teams (normal game) but 2 mini goals set-up in corner for BLUEs to try and hit if they win ball.

Targets

Goal scored = 1 point

Goal scored in under 7 seconds of winning the ball back = 2points

Coaching Points

- Stay compact and work together as a team

- Force the attackers away from goal

- Cover teammates

- Cut off as many passing lanes as possible

- Communication

Challenges

Can we stay compact as a team to force the attackersaway from goal?

Can the attackers make penetrative runs to make it moredifficult for the defenders?

Progressions

- RED team must score in under 7 seconds to get the goal. This should force the REDs to attack with real purpose hence making it more difficult (in theory) for defenders.

Regressions

- Remove the target of scoring in under 7 seconds if it is taking over the SSG

- Set-up an extra mini goal for BLUEs to try and hit if they win ball.

- Limit number of REDs to, at most, match BLUEs in their half (i.e 4v4)
