2 v 2 Defending 3 goals
Organisation:
- 20 v 30 grid
- Teams of 2
- 3 goals on each side
- 1 ball
Instructions:
- Coach plays the ball to the attackers, defendres enter the pitch and game starts
- Play till the goal is scored or 1min
- Switch sides after 5 min
Progression:
- Limit time to 30s

Coaching Points:
- Pressure (On the player with the ball).
- Cover (Deny penetration of pass & dribble).
- Balance (Communicate and work as a group. Anticipate where the ball might go. Force mistakes).

Defending in Balance
Organisation:
- 50x30 grid split into 3 zones (one 20x30 and two 10x30)
- Groups of 3 are facing opposition on the other end of the grid
- Suplly of balls with coach
Instructions:
- Practice starts with: ball fed in by coach to one team who proceed to attack opponents 3v3 & move the ball (under control) into opponents’ end zone to score.
- The ball can be either dribbled to the defenders zone or passed, but it has to be under control of the attacking team
Coaching Points
- Pressing player: distance and body position.
- Support players: distance, depth, angle & team balance.
- Tracking runners whilst maintaining sight of the ball
- Take personal responsibility for opponent when deciding to defend.
- Concentration & managing player inter-changes of position, as a unit of three
Progressions:
- Add 1 player on each side line to assist team in possession & increase potential to make wall-passes (1 touch only)
- Add 1 player in opponent’s end zone to play into & receive a return pass before entering end zone (1 touch only)

Defending a Pass
Organisation:
- A grid split into small 4x4 squares
- 1 player in each square
- 6 attackers(red), 3 defenders(blue)
- 1 ball
Instructions:
- The aim of the attacking team is to pass the ball across to the other side
- The aim of the defending team is to intercept the pass
- If the attacking team manage to pass the ball through and the ball is received - they get 1 point
- If the defending team manage to intercept the pass - 1 point
- Play for about 2 min and switch teams
Coaching points:
- If the ball is in your lane, come out and pressure the attacker
- The other 2 drop down, cover and cut off the path
This is quite difficult but works really well with the Elite team and older groups

Small sided game
Coaching points:
- Defending team has to put pressure on the player with the ball
- Make sure the players defend as a unit and don't just run out and slide tackle or try to kick the ball out

King of The Ring
Organisation:
- 25 x 25 area set up as shown
- 12 players (8 attackers & 4 defenders)
- 8 balls
Instructions:
- Select 4 players who get into pairs & connect by holding the same bib, they start game as Defenders.
- Defenders are not allowed to break away from each other/let go of bib.
- Attackers aim to dribble ball & protect their ball from being kicked out by the Defenders - not allowed outside of area.
- If Defenders kick Attacking player's ball out they are out
- Play until the last Attacker is left.
Coaching Points:
- Angle of approach
- Communication - coach each other
- Interchanging of positions - Pressure (1st Defender) & Cover/Support 2nd Defender
Progressions:
- Increase/Decrease the size of area
- Defenders tag the attackers instead of kicking their ball out.
- When an attacker is tagged, he is frozen, when second attacker gets tagged, they become a pair of defenders
