Playing Under Pressure
This session focuses on developing players’ ability to stay composed and creative when playing under pressure in a possession-based game. Through tight-area practices, players are challenged technically to control, combine, and disguise passes; tactically to recognise pressing triggers, create overloads, and choose when to play through, around, or over pressure; physically to produce repeated sharp movements, sprints, and changes of direction; and psychologically to be brave, resilient, and confident in their decision-making. The session encourages risk-taking, communication, and teamwork, creating players who can remain calm and expressive under intense opposition pressure.

Technical Players are constantly receiving under pressure, playing disguised passes, and working on first touch and short passing. |
Tactical The “slide across to the other box” condition encourages awareness of space, switching play, and recognising when to transfer possession. |
Physical Defenders press with intensity in short bursts (agility, change of direction, anaerobic conditioning), while attackers use quick movements to create angles. |
Psychological Creativity is rewarded, risk-taking is encouraged, communication is required, and shared celebrations build confidence and team cohesion. |
Social This arrival activity is designed not only to sharpen technical skills but also to build connections between players. By giving each group a team name, rewarding creative passes with bonus points, and encouraging players to call out each other’s names before sliding the ball across, the practice creates an environment where communication and togetherness are as important as possession. Small forfeits for the losing team and shared celebrations for successful sequences add fun, laughter, and positive energy, ensuring players start the session engaged, confident, and socially connected |

Technical This practice develops players technically by demanding high-quality first touches, quick passing, and clever use of disguise to retain possession in tight spaces. |
Tactical Tactically, it challenges individuals and the group to recognise pressing triggers, create overloads, and exploit spaces to play through or around the press. |
Physical Physically, the session requires sharp changes of direction, explosive movements to press or escape pressure, and repeated high-intensity efforts that mirror match demands. |
Psychological Psychologically, it encourages bravery to play under pressure, resilience when possession is lost, and confidence to make creative decisions even in tight areas. |
Social Together, the activity builds players who are calm, adaptable, and expressive when faced with pressure. |
