SSG / Out of Possession / Defending the Switch of
Play
Welsh Way Principles
Understand when and how to stop the switch by forcing the
direction of play, defending narrow, leaving the furthest player/s
Organisation / Area Size:
60/70m x 50m with tapers at the defending end
Play 9v9 including 2 GKs
How:
Reds - make sure they carry on preventing the switch of play out of possession. If they gain possession, they are looking to counter attack by breaking lines and finish by beating the Blue GK.
Blue team will look to continue to switch play before they score.
0-5 - Defend tighter, narrow, deeper
5-7 - Defend the source, get pressure on earlier,
8-10 Defend whatever the opposition do
Explanation: 9v9 game
The reds are in a GK-4-2-1-1 (Missing the wide players in a GK-4-2-3-1)
The blues a GK--3-3-1 (Missing a CM and CB in a GK-4-3-3)
The blue team in possession have to switch play after getting the ball into a wide area before they score. This will give the coach the opportunity to carry on refining the defensive principles of stopping a switch of play / dealing with a switch of play with the reds. If the red team win the ball they must expand and counter
attacking and looking to break the lines of the blue team
Teams can 'score' by:
1. The blue team switching play from a wide zone (outside thelines of the 18 yard box) to the opposite wide zone and scoring is 3
goals against the opposition
2. Scoring normally past the GK without a switch of play is 1 goal.
3. The red team scoring via a counter attack is 3 goals, a goal will be given for any lines broken also
Challenges, Conditions & Targets
Progress to you MUST get two switches play prior to scoring. Keep working the opposition full backs in blue to give you the problems. Time limit on Red team to get the ball through the lines to counter attack.
Limit Touches on blue team to move red team around.
Key Points:
Force direction of play
Defend narrow
Leave the furthest player/s

Organisation / Area Size:
60m x 50m (this may vary due to age/ability of the players and the
physical demands required)
Play 8v7
GK on the red team with 8 in a GK-4-2-1
Play 1CM, 2 full backs, #10 / #9 and two wide players on the
opposition blue team
Play 2x4 minute periods with 2 min break.
Key Factors
Specific Practice Setup - 3 zones, central and 2 wide.
PB/SK to work with RED team only, out of possession on how they stop the switch of play. When the reds have possession look to play through the lines to dribble the ball over the 1/2 way line.have possession they wont be coached but will look to break lines on the counter attack. The 2nd coach will manage the opposition to switch play and ensure realism for both teams for the duration of the session
1-4 Focus - Defend tighter, deeper, narrow
4-8 Focus -Defend the source, get pressure on earlier,
Scoring
1. The blue team switching play from a wide zone to the opposite wide zone and scoring against the GK / reds will be a goal. Two switches of play would get you 3 goals
2. The reds on gaining the ball will get three goals if they score from a counter attack and break lines and dribble into the end coned zone.
Challenges, Conditions & Targets
The conditions are full width and up to the goal and yellow cones. The targets for the blues are the wide zones either side of the practice and the fixed goal. For the red team it's the end zone. The challenges are the blue team MUST switch play before scoring.
The red team out of possession MUST fill 2 out of the three zones when defending leaving the furthest player/s. The reds are also challenged with scoring from a counter attack by breaking lines.
Challenge for the two full backs on the blue team limited to two touch in possession.
