Explosive Speed Drill

RWTB Speed drill

  • 6 players on the outside 5 players inside the square
  • Inside player passes the ball to the outside player who bursts through the central square with the ball and passes it to the next player 
  • Pass needs to be punched in 
  • Players ready to receive the ball and step on to the pass with a good touch 
  • Full speed sprint / Change of direction

Aerobic General Practice

6v6+2 General Practice - Switching Play 

  • Coach starts the practice each time
  • Before players can score they must receive the ball in the central box/zone 
  • Goals are diagonal for each team - if they score in one they must try to get to the other side to score their next goal 
  • 30x30 box / players will work for 6mins x3 sets - 3min rest between sets 
Switching Play Principles 
  • In possession make the pitch as big as possible
  • Recognise where the space is once we play through the centre how can we reach the goal? Pass/Dribble/ Around/Over/Through
  • Decision-making when to make the switch 
  • Out of possession can we defend narrow and compact
  • Can we try to defend the central zone 
  • Leave the furthest man
  • When it is suitable to do so can we get up to the ball

Specific Practice - Breaking Lines


60x30 Area size 

6v6 + 1 (Orange) + 2 GK's 

3mins x 5 sets


Both teams are focusing on In Possession Breaking Lines but there will be moments when each team is out of possession. 

The objective is for the team in possession to try to play through, around or over the thirds to score. The team in possession can use the common player but they must play in 2 touch. The GK will then play out and restart the practice. 

  • Players must try to break the lines by going through the middle third - double goal for going through centrally
  • May progress to limited touches if players are having a lot of success
  • 1st Block common player will play in the centre circle only 

In possession
Play through, around or over the opposition
Make the pitch big (Width and Depth)
Use limited touches and move the ball quickly
Try to play in areas that allow you to see both ends of the pitch
Play through, around or over the opposition based on pressure on the ball 


Out of possession
Stay narrow
Prevent split passes
Force wide
Protect the space in behind

4v4+4 General Practice - Purposeful Possession

Anaerobic


Aim of the session is based on an anaerobic (Intensive) session. Each team must score as many goals as they can. 


  • Coach plays ball into left side team, first pass is free - as he does that the defending team can send 2 players in to press the ball and try to win it back. 
  • Once they have made 6 passes the team can try and score in the goal 
  • If they score/miss the coach on the other side plays into the team on the right for the same practice 2 players will again go in to press the ball. 

  • Initially it will be 6x2min blocks then teams will rotate to out of possession. 
  • Key Points: Make the area as big as possible, watch where the pressure is coming from, on toes ready to receive, weight of pass must be good as the area will be small. 
  • Key Points: Defend as a 2, slow feet down and try to keep one way, if they have made 6 passes try to get in line and block the shot 
Progression to practice



This time, if the in possession team misses the target or doesn't make enough passes to take a shot, they will then transition to press the opposing team. The team out of possession will then become the in possession team. 
This is to try and challenge players to prepare properly & get shots on target. 
There will be 2x3 min blocks

Specific Practice - Creating and Exploiting Overloads


2x 30x20 Areas 
14 x 2 GK's


Ball starts with #1 who plays into #2 for a set back, they then run inside to create the 2v1 
#1 then plays to 3 who can combine with player 2 #4 tries to defend the goal. Once the attack is finished, the play will go to the other side so players will go from left & right. 


In possession:

Fast Passes and forward movement to create
Angle of pass
Overlap/Underlap
Weight & accuracy of Final Pass - Can the player finishing shoot 1st time?
Out of possession:
