Description

In soccer, the ability to play through the lines of the opposing team is crucial for success. This requires a combination of precise movements and passes that create windows and gaps for players to drive into. To develop this skill, coaches often design training sessions that focus on moving the ball forward through the midfield and into the attacking third of the field.

The session starts with a warm-up that emphasizes movement off the ball. Players are encouraged to make underlapping and overlapping runs to create passing options for the player on the ball. This helps to create space and time for the player in possession, making it easier to play through the opposing team's lines.

The main focus of the session is on building attacks from deep positions, such as the defensive third of the field. The coach sets up the training area with two teams, one attacking and one defending. The attacking team has players positioned in deep positions such as the goalkeeper, center-backs, and holding midfielders. The objective of the attacking team is to move the ball forward through the midfield and into the attacking third using different movements and passes.

To achieve this objective, the attacking team employs a range of techniques such as playing the ball wide, playing the ball into feet, and playing the ball over the top of the opposing team's defensive line. The players are encouraged to be creative and to try different techniques to move the ball forward.

The defending team's objective is to prevent the attacking team from moving the ball forward. This requires a high level of organization, communication, and anticipation. The defending team may employ a range of defensive strategies such as pressing, marking, and intercepting passes.

The coach observes the session and provides feedback to the players, focusing on areas that need improvement such as decision making, movement off the ball, and execution of passes. The session ends with a cool-down and a debriefing where the coach discusses the key learning points and areas for improvement.

Overall, this training session is designed to develop the ability to play through the lines of the opposing team using different movements and passes. It also helps to improve movement off the ball and encourages players to be creative and adaptable in their play. With regular practice and refinement, players can develop the skills and techniques necessary to be successful in playing through the lines and creating opportunities for their team to score.

Playing through a defensive structure in soccer can be a challenging task that requires a combination of technical skills, tactical awareness, and teamwork. Here are three key factors that can help a team play through a defensive structure:

1. Movement off the ball: One of the most important factors for playing through a defensive structure is the movement off the ball of attacking players. This involves players making runs into space, creating passing angles, and taking defenders with them to open up gaps for others to exploit. Movement off the ball can also be used to create overloads in certain areas of the field, which can help to overwhelm the opposition's defensive structure.

2. Quick and accurate passing: Another key factor for playing through a defensive structure is the ability to make quick and accurate passes. This requires players to be technically proficient and able to make split-second decisions about when and where to pass the ball. Quick and accurate passing can help to move the ball quickly through the opposition's defensive lines and create opportunities for attackers to get in behind the defense.

3. Tactical awareness: Playing through a defensive structure also requires a high level of tactical awareness from attacking players. This means being able to read the game, understand the opposition's defensive shape, and make intelligent decisions about how to break it down.

Specific Session (20 mins)

Specific-40 minutes

Width- 50m

Length- 50m

This drill is all about trying to find gaps between the midfield or defense putting the striker/s through on goal.

The objective of the drill is to try and feed the ball from the middle section (2/3) into the strikers whether it is playing straight through the defensive line (1/4) or playing it to a player in the opponents' defensive area so they can receive it and either drive into the opponents final quarter or passing it into the strikers to go and score.

In the middle, is a 6 vs 6 splits between 2 zones where there is a 4 vs 2 in each section where players will have to keep the ball away from the defenders while trying to play the ball into the zone where there are 2 wingers or straight through to the striker. If the defending team steals the ball/intercepts the ball they look to do the same thing their way.

When the striker/wide midfielders receive the ball, they aim to try and score in the small goals allocated. The defending side where the ball gets played through can then make recovery runs to try and stop the ball from going into the goal.

What?

Break the lines of the opponent's defense

Who?

*2,3,6,7,8,9,10,11

When?

When we are entering the opponent's half on a quick turn-over or we are trying to break down their defense with runs beyond or breaking through their defensive line with our wingers.

Why?

Defensive lines are always difficult to break when the team is well-structured so can we play the pass-through or break the line with runs through?

We are looking to move the defense structure around using width and depth, forcing the defensive line to stretch creating windows to run beyond.

Team Formation

4-2-2 (8) vs 4-2-2 (8)

Intensive work as there will be lots of work and there will be plenty of transitions and recovery in a small area.

Possible Coaching Points

1-Move the ball quickly so the defensive line has to move more so there will eventually be enough space to play the ball through to the striker or the wide players have enough space to receive it and drive into the area.

2-The strikers and wide midfielders have got to be on the move, to cause the defenders to have to keep an eye on them distracting them which could cause them to misstep allowing there to be a window to pass through.

3-The midfield 4 should not be in a straight line there should be width and depth for them to always have the option to play the ball as they will be getting pressed by 1/2 players so they'll all need angles to pass to.

Progression- To make it harder the strikers can drop into the other team's zone to create a 4vs3 so there is more pressure and less time on the ball.

Regression- To make it easier, one of the 7 or 11 has got to become a defender for their team and drop between the 2 strikers so that in zone 2/3 have got a 4vs1 so there should be more success in the middle but harder to score. If they are struggling to score I will take one of the 7 or 11 from each team and have 2 neutral players in the middle so there is more of an overload in the middle.

SSD Game (20 mins)

For this SSD Game, it is a normal scrimmage but if you manage to Dribble/Pass/run through the cones and score from that play they can gain extra points.

1 Goal with no cones played through= 1 point

1 Goal with going through a red cone= 2 points

1 Goal with going through the orange cones= 3 points

What?

Try to find the space and play through it the cones-Trying to take the space as quickly as possible

Who?

*1,4,5,6,7,11,9

When?

This can happen in any part of the field whether it is the defenders looking to break the attacking line to play it to the wingers or it is the 6 trying to play it into the 9.

Why?

I am looking to get the players to be able to look for windows through the windows of players/cones to use the space behind the defensive lines, using movements to get past the midfield and defensive lines.

Possible Coaching Points

1- Use double movements to keep play unpredictable

2- Can the defenders and midfielders under and overlap the person with the ball to create space.

Progression 1- If you go through multiple cones the amount of cones that you get through is how many points you get.

Progression 2- If you win the ball in the opponent's half and score within 10 seconds you get an extra point.

Team Formations= 1-2-3-1
