Description

SESSION OBJECTIVES -  To develop a team’s understanding of the main principles when defending in a mid-block to create opportunities to counter-attack, including:
• Compactness
• Positioning to intercept
• First pass forward and incisive forward movement
• Finishing the counter-attack

EX 1: 3v3 COUNTER WAVE GAME
This is a wave practice in which players have the chance to both attack and defend in a 3v3 scenario.
The playing area is divided into thirds. The defending team is encouraged to stay in the middle third,
recognise opportunities to steal possession and counter-attack to score. They are not permitted to drop into their own defending third.
Once a phase has finished, the six players who have just played will change with six new players previously
located behind the goals.

ex 1: 8v8 + GKs TARGET GAME
A possession practice takes place on a pitch that is split into 3rds and uses 18 players –
The game is used to get players in the habit of getting into a mid-block to protect a target and then regaining the ball and playing forward quickly.
The practice is directional; the aim for the defending team is to stop the opposition passing the ball into the goalkeeper at the opposite end. This should be made
difficult by the defending team being compact and tough to play through.

Ex 3: 11v11 GAME - Full size pitch
This is an 11v11 practice used to give the players an opportunity to understand and develop their out-of- possession roles and responsibilities, and then look to
counter-attack upon regaining the ball.
Players given a number of different ways to score points – all of which
relate to the session theme

3v3 Wave Game (15 mins)

Acitivity

A directional themed game played on a pitch split into thirds.
Requires three players from both teams at any one time.
Coaches (C) will serve to one of the goalkeepers to begin the practice.
This goalkeeper is then allowed one free pass into an attacking teammate in the middle third.
Once the ball has progressed into the middle third, the possession team is not allowed to play back into their
defensive third.
Attacking team – Team A should attempt to progress into the final third and score past the opposing goalkeeper to score one point.
If the defending team (Team B) manages to steal the ball back in the middle third, counter-attack into the final third and score = 3pts

Progessions- If you feel that the pace of the practice needs to increase, introduce a condition whereby each attack should only take a maximum of 10 seconds.
When a phase has finished, either by a team scoring or the ball going out of the play, a new set of three players
from each team should enter the pitch. One of the coaches then plays into the other goalkeeper to start the next phase, so both teams get a chance to attack and defend during the practice

Coaching Points
OUT OF POSSESSION
RECOGNISING PRESSING CHANCES -players must be encouraged to see opportunities to press the possession team in the middle third. The practice is designed to encourage the defending team to win the ball within an area from which they can counter-attack.
1v1 DEFENDING - There should be lots of opportunity for 1v1 defending if players are able to get up to the ball. While attempting
to show outside, coach defenders to be side-on, take short steps and wait for opportunities to nick the ball.
Encourage cover and balance behind the pressing player, which could lead to interception opportunities.
RECOVERY RUNS - During moments of defensive transition, there will be opportunity for players to practice making recovery
runs to get back behind the ball. All recovery runs to be sprints.
IN POSSESSION
FORWARD MOVEMENT -  Forwards runs beyond a defender can create opportunities for through balls. These runs can also
act as decoy runs that drag defenders away from their shape to create other goalscoring chances.
FIRST PASS FORWARD - Encourage the players to pay attention to the detail of their passing – passes should be smooth and played with the correct weight and accuracy. Always look to play forwards 1st, then Sideways 2nd, then Backwards 3rd.
To encourage quick attacking play, attention should be drawn towards playing the first pass forward.
1v1 ATTACKING- This is a practice that should lend itself to plenty of 1v1 attacking duels. Encourage players on the ball to
attempt to isolate defenders in 1v1s and look to beat them on the dribble.
FINISHING- Finishing should be crisp and clinical. Encourage as many shots on target as possible

9v9 target Game (25 mins)

Activity

A possession game 8v8 + GKs. on a pitch split into 3rds. The practice is directional, so both teams are always
attacking and defending the same end. Play starts when one of the coaches (C) passes to on of the goalkeepers.

How to Score - here, the team in possession attempts to work the ball to the other GK, who
is positioned in a box at the far end. This GK must catch or receive to feet to earn that team a point.
The team in possession can play to the opposite goalkeeper from the ATT or MID third, but not from their defending third.
The offside line for each team is on the edge of each final third.
The team in possession can only make two passes in their defending third before attempting to play through
the middle third. This increases the opportunity for the defending team to win the ball back in the middle third and counter.
If the defending team wins the ball in the middle , counter-attacks and successfully passes into the GK = 1pt point.
If the team in possession successfully plays through the 3rds and into the far GK, they will gain two points. This should encourage the defending team to focus even more on ensuring the ball is not played through them or allowing easy passes into the keeper.
If a team scores points, they start the next phase with possession from their goalkeeper.

Coaching Points
OUT OF POSSESSION- READY IN THE MIDDLE
The defending team should allow the opposition to have the ball in their own defensive third. When the
ball is played into the middle 3rd or the final 3rd, the defending team should become more aggressive with
their pressure on the ball.
INTERCEPTIONS- Defending players behind the ball should be trying to read the body language of the player on the ball and anticipate where the pass is going to be played with the aim of making an interception.
SOFT PRESS - The defender closest to the ball will have to make a decision on whether they are able to apply pressure on
the ball-carrier. A soft press may be applied to the ball- carrier to encourage them to play a pass.
COMPACTNESS - Whenever the ball is lost, the team now defending should protect the middle of the pitch by making recovery runs to the centre and getting behind the ball as quickly as possible. Ideally, the ball should be guided into wide areas.

IN POSSESSION -FIRST PASS FORWARD - Always to play 1st pass Forward, if not on play Sideways, If not on then play Backwards. As soon as the ball is regained, encourage the player who has won the ball to make the first pass forwards to
start the counter-attack.
QUICK COMBINATION PLAY- use of quick combinations when the ball has been won can help the counter-attacking team move the ball into areas from which the target goalkeeper can be found.
FORWARD RUNS - Challenge the players to recognise opportunities to make forward runs that threaten the opposition during moments of attacking transition

11v11 (25 mins)

Activity

A normal 11v11 match, in which both teams can attack and defend how they want, and can score from anywhere.

The pitch is split into thirds.

How to Score- Both teams can score bonus points if they score goals that in some way relate to the theme of defending in a mid-block to counter.
In Possession -Any normal goal scored from open play = 1pt.
Any goal scored after a team has won possession and counter-attacked is = 2pts.
Any goal scored after a team has won possession in the middle third and then played into the attacking third = 3pts
The main objective is for the players to understand how they are going to score more goals and how they might
apply their own tactics to do so
