Description

This a sessions designed for goalkeepers of mixed abilities and it can be easily adapted to any age or ability. The session should last for around 30 minutes and involves 3 different parts. A small handing warm-up, a recap of 3 different techniques and then a main practice that can be adapted to be slightly more random.

Warm-Up (5 mins)

Key Factors

  • Solid Base and Set Position - Feet shoulder width apart, slightly bent legs, on the balls of your feet or toes (depending on the technique), arms out in front of you and your head still focusing on the ball.
  • W Technique - Make a W shape with your hands, thumbs together and behind the ball, keep your core and head still and keep your eyes on the ball.
  • Scoop Catch Technique - Hands underneath the line of the ball with your pinky fingers together, fingers facing the ball and close your hands to your chest upon impact with the ball.

Organisation

  • This is a 5 minute warm-up practice that uses 2 goalkeepers working together and can involve many different handling techniques. Both goalkeepers start at one end of the cones in front of them. Goalkeeper 1 will perform a small overhead throw to goalkeeper 2, who will catch the ball in the W technique above their head. Goalkeeper 2 will then throw to goalkeeper 1 who does the same. This happens while both goalkeepers are moving up and down the line of cones together. I would recommend 90 seconds on each technique, however this can be adapted if the goalkeepers need extra work on a certain technique. The techniques include:
  • W above the head.
  • W in line with the nose.
  • Scoop Catch technique in line with the stomach.

Technical Practice (10 mins)

  • This practice involves 3 goalkeepers, but you could use 4 and takes around 10 minutes as this practice builds on from the warm-up. There is 1 working goalkeeper at a time. The working goalkeeper will catch the ball in either of the techniques that the coach chooses, and will then throw the ball back to the server. They will then turn and ready themselves in a set position to catch the ball from the next server. This allows the goalkeeper to receive the ball in different scenarios and positions, whilst working on each technique. For this practice, each goalkeeper should work for at least 30 seconds on each technique before rotating.
  • To progress this practice, you could have the goalkeeper receiving and playing a short pass to one of the other goalkeepers before turning and catching the ball from another server. This could potentially be a scenario where they have played the ball short to one of their defenders who has lost possession of the ball and now the goalkeeper has to save a shot.

Random Practice (15 mins)

  • Positioning in relation to the goal.

Organisation

  • For this 15 minute practice, you will need 4 goalkeepers (1 can be the GK coach). There is one working goalkeeper, with the rest acting as servers. The servers are positioned on the edge of the box, and/or juts inside the box. They take it in turns to either shoot, or or serve a volley at the working goalkeeper. You can have each server serve a different ball so the goalkeeper can practice a certain technique at each server, or it can be completely random, depending on the ability level and/or what you would like to work on.
  • To start the practice, have the goalkeeper receive a pass on the back foot and open up to play a pass to the far side (this saves the goalkeeper starting cold).
  • They will then receive a shot to their stomach in which they must perform the scoop catch technique. They then turn to face a volley for the W technique, before finally having to save a random shot from the final location. Work in sets of 2 or 3 before rotating.
