SSG - Defend Final Third (20 mins)
Welsh way principles
Understand when and how to minimise space, deal with crosses/shots and protect space centrally in the defensive third.
Pitch size and Organisation.
75 x 50 yrds area, Tapered at 1 end.
Balls, bibs and cones.
2 x Large Goals,
8 vs 8 plus 2 goalkeepers
4 x 5 mins blocks
Blue set up GK-4-3-1
Reds set up GK2-1-4-1
Head coach - coaching the BLUE side
Blue team objectives.
- Protect the middle,
- Stay narrow and compact,
- Force wide,
- Bodies on the line
Assistant coach - managing the RED side.
Red team objectives
- Ball speed,
- Risk taking,
- Final pass
- Finishing
- Player movement to create spaces.
- Keeping width and depthExplanation:
Aim of practice focuses on defending team limiting the attacking team in creating goal scoring opportunities.
Supply of balls with red keeper to create better ball rolling time.
Practice starts by red keeper playing the ball to a red teammate in space, changing who he gives it to depending on the blues applied pressure.
The reds will look to create problems for the blues with movement and quick passing also keeping very wide to stretch the pitch.
The blues will look to communicate continually with each other including the GK to keep the unit shape narrow and compact leaving the furthest player away from the ball, keeping good distances between the defenders and midfielders (6-8yrds).
Challenges,Conditions and Targets:
Blue team - 2 points for scoring
Blue team - 1 point if red team are unable to shoot through phase of play
Blue team - must score within 8 seconds if able to gain possession.
If the blue team score as a reward they get to start the next phase of play from there goalkeeper.
Red team scores 1 point for each goal they score by going around the blue team
Red team scores 2 points for scoring a goal where they play through the blue team

Head coach could start on position A and assistant coach could start on position B. Although through the practice they will rotate around the pitch to positions C & D.
The head coach may also enter the field of play to get another view of the game or to offer concurrent feedback on both positive and negative aspects of the session.
