Specific - Defend final Third (10 mins) (10 mins)

Welsh way principles

Understand when and how to minimise space, deal with crosses/shots and protect space centrally in the defensive third.

Pitch size and Organisation.

60 x 50 yrds area with 2 channels down either side as a visual aid for the reds to keep there width (10 yrds)

Balls, bibs and cones.

1 x Large Goal, 2 x mini goals.

6 vs 6 plus 2 goalkeepers / server 1 end

2 x 5 mins blocks ( then switch the defenders)

Blue set up 1-4-2 (4-2-3-1)

Reds set up 1-3-3 (4-3-3)

Head coach - coaching the BLUE side

Blue team objectives.

- Protect the middle,

- Stay narrow and compact,

- Force wide,

- Bodies on the line

- Fast pressure on the ball

- Stop crosses at source

- Defend the box

Assistant coach - managing the RED side.

Red team objectives

- Ball speed,

- Risk taking,

- Final pass

- Finishing

- Player movement to create spaces.

Explanation:

Aim of practice focuses on defending team limiting the attacking team in creating goal scoring opportunities.

Supply of balls with red keeper to create better ball rolling time.

Practice starts by red keeper playing the ball to a red teammate in space, changing who he gives it to depending on the blues applied pressure.

The reds will look to create problems for the blues with movement and quick passing also keeping very wide to stretch the pitch.

The blues will look to communicate continually with each other including the GK to keep the unit shape narrow and compact  leaving the furthest player away from the ball, keeping good distances between the defenders and midfielders (6-8yrds).

Challenges,Conditions and Targets:

Blue team - 2 points by scoring in 1 of the 2 small goals

Blue team - 1 point if red team are unable to shoot through phase of play

Blue team - must score within 8 seconds if able to gain possession.

If the blue team score as a reward they get to start the next phase of play from there goalkeeper.

Red team scores 1 point for each goal they score by going around the blue team

Red team scores 2 points for scoring a goal where they play through the blue team

Interventions

Concurrent,

Walk through,

Terminal,

Coaching process.

Coaching positions.
